My god, how did these guys do this !! hahaha

Mentzer couldnt hold a candle to any of these physiques not even close.....

Mentzer would have beaten Shawn Ray. Wheeler and Levrone would have beaten Mentzer, though Wheeler killed his kidneys and started to abuse oil. The other guy would be a close call.

You do realize gooey, whether you want to admit it or not, for a 5 year period (1976-1980) Mike Mentzer was probably the best bodybuilder on the planet don't you?

Alright gooey, I can't admire Vander and I can't admire Mentzer without getting some shit, goddamit who the fuck can I like?.... ;)

I understand both sides and I definitely see what marshall is saying.

Is it possible that because skinnier, ripped physiques are what are covering magazines today have cause hugeness to be 'out of style'? What about the huge amounts of bad press on steroids? Maybe it took a while for the human body to be maxed out and adding any more size just didn't look good. Perhaps that time would have been better spent refining size into something that looks good. Maybe a decade will come when someone says "If ronnie of jay would have spent that time working on their aesthetics and symmetry...." See what I mean?

I think these big guys were looked up to more back then then they are today. Seems like today, everyone knows (or believes) every big guy is just a juicer.

One last thought, is that maybe guys that are gifted in size and strength naturally just don't bother with BBing anymore and go into the sports where there's a lot more money to be made.

Many times I've been walking through a mall or somthing with a girl and see a photo of a veiny, huge bodybulder and hear her say "I think that's just gross." I got to a point in size that I even thought, enough was enough, and now I'm going for a particular look rather than just size on size. Are guys like us falling out of fad?

A lot of this could be way off but maybe a combination of a lot of things is why things have changed so much today vs. the 70's through the 90's.

Different supplements work for different people. I take creatine and gatorade after "every workout" along with a shake. And yes, I believe that they are working for me. Oh, and I bought the creatine at GNC.

I look at that and I want that look. I look at Ronnie and all I think about is how hard it would be for him to breathe, how much he sweats just when he walks and how bad he would look like in clothes.
I agree, good point.

That's what I'm saying !

Do you think all of these kids in the gym spending hundreds of dollars sucking down their special PWO formulas, loading on creatine, buying NO supplements, tribulus, zma etca al look any better? Nope, just lighter in the wallet.

Guys with the only goal of looking good at the beach or in the gym, trying to figure out how many iu's of insulin they can take w/out going into a coma or how they can cycle the latest peptide that's available. Forget about how much of the "boring" regular stuff they are taking (test, deca, tren, dbol)

Geez, Mentzer ate food and took boring regular aas and trained his ass off, that's about it. How many people mega dosing on slin/gh/igf can put their pics up against his. How many? A micro-percentage of those that are doing it, that's who. IF THAT
I agree, good point.

Being one of the very few people I know who has maxed his NATURAL genetic growth potential, I can definitely see, in the gym and on the boards, how all the guys are actually turning to gear TOO EARLY in their game, and not understanding training and nutrition enough. I believe that back in the '70s, guys started training, then eating, then gear when gains were slowing down. And SMALL AMOUNTS of gear at that. None of that 10g Test, 5g Tren, 5g Eq, 300mg Drol stuff. Nowadays kids start lifting and a few months later they're on the juice. Yes they also do the whole supplement thing, just in case. Bottom line, young bodybuilders are immature people fixed on the idea of getting big and the way to do it seems to be gear, supplements and the whole range of peptides. We live in a civilization that values instant gratification, and simply getting huge isn't enough. Getting huge TODAY is what the young guys are looking for.

I'm thinking the top modern bodybuilders are of that crowd. They juice early and hard, use the whole spectrum of drugs, and then eventually work on the training and nutrition just enough to get where they need. It isn't a contest of the best bodybuilder anymore, it's a contest of the most reckless drug abuser. By starting early and hard, they grow huge. Extremely displeasing to the eye, but huge. Even Melvin Anthony is beginning to have guts.

That said, Vic Martinez is huge and looks good. There are some in the top ranks that do. Did you guys see Vince Taylor? Muscle maturity does wonders.

Evidence? I'm not conducting an investigation gooey.

I also figure that Traci Lords fucked a whole lot of people before she went into porn @ 15. No, I DON'T have any factual evidence. :)

I'm not going to debate about what they use, just like I'm not going to prove to you that I think Lords fucked alot of guys before she went into porn.

Proof is IN the pudding !!

thats what I like opinionated , unsupported information. No real evidence, just a bunch of statements of what "u" believe is factual. I see politics in your future.
go Team Mentzer!

I can honestly say......

I appreciate all BBers and I think Mentzer had an awsome physique, but best ever..... not even close. Beat shawn Ray..... Only in La la Land. Sitck with your guns amigo I respect people that stick up for what they believe in then someone who follows the trend because others do. Was Mentzer the best in those yrs cause he was better or was it because Arnold was not there? Lastly appreciate any physique u want bro. But I will say if one comes onto promus and makes a statement "best ever" or the "worst ever" u will have conflicting arguments and bored, OCD, arumentative people like me after dat ass :)

Why don't people look better now than in 1976 TP? Seriously.

Why is that, Phil? I think he was goofy but the physique wasn't bad at all(to me).

Amazing. Much better than arnold in this pick imo. Wasnt lou technically "bigger" than arnold, just not "better"

This is a strange thread. "better looking than Vander".....oh man I think I just figured out who was buying Craig Titus's used workout gear.

I agree w/ Big A, in fact seeing that pic, it almost looks as if someone used computer generation to make it! I had the opportunity to see Ronnie guest pose in 2004 and then we all went to dinner together and even eating for him looked tiring.

Didn't they find him, "IN A VAN!!! DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!!"

hehehe Sorry Marshall. Couldn't resist.

Yeah, he was just a little guy... ya know, 6'5, 285-300... tiny. He'd routinely bench 560 in his prime and at 50 years old can still do 500.

He beat out Arnold for the role of Hulk because Arnold wasn't considered big enough (!!!)... 6'2 and not considered tall enough LOL

He could never beat Arnold on stage with Arnold's symmetry even though Arnold was 3 in' shorter and 40 lbs lighter.

marshall

i can see you believe in the basics and hey the basics are a great base.what i don't understand is why you say nothing else builds muscle.are you going on scientific evidence,or personal opinion?

1.insulin is one of the most anabolic hormone there is(fact)
2.gh no miracle drug, but do your research.(works wonders at 2 iu's a day, takes 6 months before you notice )don't think you should take until at least 30.
3.igf-1 lr3 helped me blast through a plateu that i was stuck at for 4 yrs.i gained 12lbs in two weeks
4.creatine-does it theoretically build muscle?depends how you look at it,it does helps with strength and endurance.so if you lift more weight,it does aid somewhat in muscle growth(only if you use that edge to push yourself)
5.AAS-do they build muscle?scientific studies prove that if you take 200mg of test and sit on the couch you will build muscle.is it enough to make a difference, not really.i know a few(being nice)people that i could buy them whatever juice they wanted and they still would look the same.so juice is another tool to push you past you natural potential.
6.protein-well don't eat or drink any and tell me how many gains you make!!
7.the other supps you mentioned -don't know anything about them.
8.syntherol-does it help build muscle, how can it it's just oil?if used correctly it stretches the fascia, which allows the muscle more room to grow.

so my point is,if you don't have the knowledge to train correctly, take in proper nutrition, and rest enough,it doesn't matter what you take.if you have these things down, and your trying to go to the next level then decide if it's worth the money to try these things.

out of curiosity where do you live?what time do you train? most of the serious BB i know train during the day because they don't want to fight with "joe know it all"doing 15 sets on the tricep press down machine.so maybe this is why you don't see alot of people who look good.

one last thing, using your comparison.why aren't the people today in better shape considering how the equipment has advanced over the last 30 yrs?

The most anti-catabolic drug might be a better description. Insulin when used in "bodybuilding dosages" does not increase protein synthesis. Just a minor point. :D

Yes Ouch, Lou definitely would've owned professional bodybuilding from 1976 until he decided to quit competing.

He made the right choice though.
