My grandma needs help with inflammation/pain relief

My grandma had a knee surgery 8 years ago and had to have it repaired a year later; they totally screwed her knee up! She is 88 now and is always in constant pain; she never complains but you know it is always bothering her. What appears to me is that they put the wrong sized knee replacement in. Anyways; she is too old to have it replaced and her knee is hot to the touch. It is just constantly inflamed. What products will help with inflammation?? It needs to be topical or in pill form; I was thinking curcumin.

*On a side note she has taken everything under the sun from doctors and nothing is working; just hoping somebody had a better answer on here.

I would say around a dozen across half the state of Texas. I am trying to get her to go to Dallas and see some specialists there. They mainly give her pain meds; but I would think minimizing inflammation would help with pain.

Her knee is seriously hot when you touch it; it's that inflamed.

That's just wrong...

At that age, one mistake and she can die.
I've always had luck with Voltaren for soccer injuries, knee pain and this kind of stuff, but it won't cure the cause of the pain.

Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory.

Put 3 burro banana peels in rubbing alcohol for a few days, then rub a bit of that to alleviate pain. Camphor oil can help too...

Her uric acid is in range, right? Avoid dairy and red meat.

Not sure on her uric acid... I'll see if she has some recent bloodwork. Thanks!

Hey buddy! My wife is 37 and just had a full knee replacement due to a sports injury when she was younger. Our in home PT prescribed her a Tens Unit for pain and it has been a Godsend for her. She also uses ice to keep the inflammation down.

The Tens units seem to be hit or miss. It was recommended to me by my chiro and did nothing. To answer the original question I would find the best knee doc in a large city nearest you and get to the bottom of it.

I would first find a geratric specialist and see what they say. Sounds to me like docs dont want to bother with someone her age. just give her pain pills and send her home. that is no answer, i agree with you.

I use a tens machine and have good results for severe chronic pain, try tiger balm, and deffo use cold packs to try to reduce inflammation. keep trying different docs youll find a good one eventually.

I would go for arnica cream for local relief (its an homeopathic cream that comes from europe but it works great topically) and high doses (1-2g) oral Curcumin (either meriva or BCM-95). Astaxanthin could be a great add in the 12 - 24 mg range with 3-6 g total epa/dha for fish oil. It's not traditional medicine but if she tried everything with no success. At least those thing will help her quality of life in different way.

That's the stuff you want for pain relief gel its cheaper the cream is few dollars for more expensive but I have used this brand with success (I have serious pain issue in my neck because my c2 is unstable and slip out of where it should be all the time)

BCM-95 curcumin has worked great for me and my clients to fight inflammation and joint pain. I don't let my clients use NSAIDS for a number of reasons and the curcumin has solved the same problems

Thanks! That stuff is pretty cheap; I'm gonna order it now!!!

Is curcumin best to take all at once or split it into 2 doses?

I would never recommend that your grandma take anything. At her age, she has a fragile body. Without a complete knowledge of what's going on with her, anything I say might do her grave harm.

Example: put her on Voltaren.

Yeah, Voltaren was one of the first miracle anti-inflammatories. It also has a high incidence of provoking gut bleeding, serious gut bleeding.

What shape is your grandma's digestive tract in? I don't know.

Is she taking blood thinners, as many elderly patients do? I don't know.

How are her kidneys? That's where NSAIDS are largely broken down and elminated. They have little liver strain, but terrible for kidneys. How are her kidneys? I don' know.

Giving her Voltaren could literally be a death sentence. Recommending any drug or supplement for such a patient without knowing her full medical history could be a death sentence.
