I have used the last of my crappy fish oil caps (Off brand of junk). Now i need a recommendation of a good quality fish oil supplement. I have heard good stuff about NOW Ultra Omega 3 as well as the Carleson line. What is everyone using? Thanks KS

i used to use bulk nutraplanet fish oil but now i switched to true protein because i heard the qualith was great(as is nutraplanets) but the price couldnt be beaten.

This has been discussed before but be careful of fish oil off the shelves. Most of it is rancid and counter productive in this state.
I get Lovaza a prescription pharmaceutical grade from my doc.I get it due to high tryglycerides.
But due some research and find a reputable brand, its worth a couple extra dollars for a good quality product.
Also do a search some recomendations that sounded good were made awhile back in some threads.

Thanks for the replys. I did a search and really didnt find what i was looking for. I did find one that talked about rancid oils on the shelves as well as doctor prescribed fish oils but i really didnt find anything about otc fish oil recommendations. KS

I like Carlson's products: i use the Salmon oil and also Cod liver oil.
Nordic naturals are another quality product.
My opinion...

Any pharm grade in a dark glass bottle should be sufficient. Price is a good indicator of quality here as well. I pay about $30 per glass bottle with 44 teaspoons at 5 grams of fat/per teaspoon.

I've tried several brands and have settled on Ascenta. I tried Now foods that also had red yeast rice and CoQ10, and San nutrition's omega 3's, but they were both rancid when i opened them.

read this from weston price:

most brands of cod liver oil go through a process that removes all of the natural vitamins. The resultant product contains very low levels of vitamin A and virtually no vitamin D. Some manufacturers add manufactured vitamins A and D to the purified cod liver oil and until recently, one manufacturer added the natural vitamins removed during processing back into the cod liver oil. Fortunately, we now have available in the U.S. a naturally produced, unheated, fermented high-vitamin cod liver oil that is made using a filtering process that retains the natural vitamins.

The high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil is sold as a food so does not contain vitamin levels on the label. However, after numerous tests, the approximate values of A and D have been ascertained at 1900 IU vitamin A per mL and 390 IU vitamin D per mL. Thus 1 teaspoon of high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil contains 9500 IU vitamin A and 1950 IU vitamin D, a ratio of about 5:1.

Based on these values, the dosage for the high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil is provided as follows:

* Children age 3 months to 12 years: 1/2 teaspoon or 2.5 mL, providing 4650 IU vitamin A and 975 IU vitamin D.
* Children over 12 years and adults: 1 teaspoon or 10 capsules, providing 9500 IU vitamin A and 1950 IU vitamin D.
* Pregnant and nursing women: 2 teaspoon or 20 capsules, providing 19,000 IU vitamin A and 3900 IU vitamin D.

Please note that the fermented cod liver oil contains many co-factors that may enhance the body's uptake and usage of vitamins A and D; in fact, many have reported results equivalent to those obtained from high-vitamin cod liver oil with half the recommended dose, that is ¼ teaspoon or 1.25 mL for children age 3 months to 12 years; ½ teaspoon or 5 capsules for children over 12 years and adults; and 1 teaspoon or 10 capsules for pregnant and nursing women.

As of Spring, 2009, we recommend the following brands of cod liver oil. Sources of high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil and high-vitamin cod liver oil with natural vitamins added are in the BEST category; sources of processed cod liver oil with synthetic vitamins in the right proportions are in the GOOD category. We do not recommend brands of cod liver oil that have only low levels of vitamins A and D.

^Do you have a recommendation on gel vs liquid and flavor?

I'm all about trying new fish oils, but every time I buy one, they end up making me sick. So I'll try this one. I try to stay away from the capsules as best I can, as they cause the most abdominal distress for me.

i really really doubt the fermented cod liver oil from green pastures will make you sick because it is manufactured correctly . it is not highly processed like other fish and cod liver oils but there could be a chance your digestive system does not take to oils well in general in that case you want to take the emulsified version.

i take the non flavored, non antioxidant formula which is just the pure fermented cod liver oil because i don't want anything in mine other the the oil itself. but other people think that one is to strong so the get a flavored one, which is perfectly fine. the gel vs oil vs capsule is just a texture preference some people like pills over liquid etc..

the skate liver oil is also fantastic too. it has everything the cod liver oil has plus chondroitin, squalene, and alkoxglycerols

the best thing to do is have the fish oil with the high vitamin butter oil everyday. they sell them in combo products as well

Thanks for the info...

I am hit and miss with anything "oil" related. If it's in a gelcap, I usually have problems, and end up with heartburn or other issues. In pure oil form, some are just fine, and others just don't agree with me.

I think I will try that one out...

Thanks again...

Thanks for all the input fellas. Some very good info in this thread so far. It seems that more and more people are saying that fish oil is one of the most important supplements you can take (Benefiting fat loss as well as health benefits). I think i will go with the carleson line. They sell it at vitamin shoppe which is about 10 minutes from me. Thanks guys!

I used to use NOW Omega 3s but I have switched to TP's:

Much better value, as high of EPA (180mg/1g) and DHA (120mg/1g) that I've seen, and I trust that it is what it says it is since it's from TP.

Yeah i looked at that one as well. I have used TP before on different supplements and was very pleased.

I use TrueProteins fish oil. Only negative is the fish burps!
