On two different occasions my shoulder has "given out on me during my push day with moderate weight. Yesterday was on incline dumbbell bench with 70lbs. Pretty standard weight I use during a warm up and right in the middle of pushing I felt a pop in my shoulder and couldn't finish the rep. No pain and I was able to go back and complete my chest work out. On another occasion it happened on military dumbbell press same scenario non work set with moderate weight. Can someone tell me what is causing this and how to keep it from happening? Or maybe suggest a better routine. My concern is this will happen to me on a work set and I'll drop a dumbbell on myself and get injured.

Personally, if my Shoulder was giving out for No Apparent Reason. I would get a Medical Assessment and an X-Ray to see what's going on.
Sounds like some type of Chronic Condition, as it keeps on happening.
So possibly an Old Injury....................... JP

Sounds like something ligamentous in your cuff. I would get it checked out.

After having muscles reattached, ruptures fixed on one and a shoulder replacement on the other, my experience is that a number of those things can cause the symptoms you are having.

Get it checked.
I have bad rotator cuffs. When mine gives out it swells and i avoid that exercise for months. Hgh, BPC157, and TB500 all help with healing.

Seeking medical help is the last thing I wanted to do due to cost of treatment without surgery. It's probably going to be a necessity though.
The surprising thing to me is the lack of pain. I was able to continue on like nothing happened and even today it's really not all that sore. If I were to describe it it would be a slight discomfort and that's it.

I can't think of an old injury. Maybe a chronic condition?

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the human body and because of that it is difficult to pinpoint the exact root of the problem without an inside look into it.

You mentioned a "popping" sensation and then inability to complete the rep sounds like a instability issue or subluxation.

Financially it sucks having to dish out money for mri's and a diagnosis but honestly if you are planning on working out for the rest of your life it would be money well spent.

Seeing as how when I was young I was a twig then got big and went from being big to being a fat ass and back to being in shape. I don't want to go back so I guess I'll have to look into a specialist in my area. My main concern is if it turns out to be something that requires surgery not sure if I have the cash to pay for a costly operation.

You will need an Xray and possibly an MRI with dye. If you go to a Chiropractor sometimes you can pay them for x rays which is less then 100.

Update: I found a bone and joint specialist in my area that will give me an eval and xray for 500 dollars. The person that scheduled my appointment made it sound like it wasn't a huge deal and they see it quite frequently.

Still hoping it is something I can get resolved without surgery.

Good luck Brotha. That would be great if you didn’t need surgery.

Seeing as how you have bad rotator cuffs, have you had to have surgery?

I'd like to know what to expect.

Haha like i mentioned i hate doctors. I never had them checked. I work around the injuries avoiding things that i know will cause a tear like bench press or shoulder press. I do machine shoulder presses but slow and not heavy. Most every thing i train one arm at a time and very slow and controlled. If anything feels bad i stop and find an alternative.

I tore My right Shoulder a few times. Never even thought of going to a Doctor.
Rehab was 3 yrs of light shoulder Extensions, 2-3 times a week with 20 lbs..
Finally back to overhead pressing and 50lb extensions again!

Point is, find a exercise that does not hurt and let time and blood flow heal it!

Treading Water worked well also...
