My entire left side feels off... My left arm being the worse. Cant barely hold a dumbell, grip gives out. Left arm is constantly in pain but what feels like I suppose nerve pain.

Pulled heavy deads about 2 weeks ago after fairly heavy squats. Felt a tweak in my lower back that traveled up my neck. One of those where you cant turn your head for a few days and it hurts to sit down to poop (lower back). Happens to me a couple times a year, I train through it, no big deal. This time my arm is F ing killing me. As I said cant hold a dumbell, it's zapped my strength, shoulders hurt I suppose from overcompensating. For example, 3 weeks ago 365 bench for a fairly smooth 5 or 6 top set, 315 x10 no real sweat... Yesterday I couldn't unrack 365 as the pain was crazy and it felt like a God damn ton. 315 was a grind and hasn't felt that heavy in years so something is going on and it ain't going away. Only stating weights so you a get an idea of the drop off in performance. Normally, I just train around the pain and things typically get better, this doesnt feel that way and I'm going on weeks now w no improvement.

I've been squatting 3 times a week bc it's about the only thing I can do and now my knee is acting a fool
.. Fuck getting old.

Seeing if anyone has dealt w nerve issues such as this, or if this even sounds like that? Anything I can do...? Haven't been to the doc in years, never a chiro or anything of the sorts and dont want to unless I have too.

Left arm is controlled by nerve bundles coming from c5-c7
Going thru this now, been almost a year of pt, chrio, ART, epidurals etc
I'm getting two level fusion end of month and I can't wait to regain my strength and size on my left side again, shrunk before my eyes and nothing I could do about it.
See a spine specialist or neurologist asap and get MRI/EMG/NCV
I personally wouldn't be putting a loaded barbell across my cervical spine either to squat
Good luck bro

I used to get that neck problem I’d say almost once a year. The first time I got it I was playing baseball. I was around 14yrs old I swung and I felt it immediately as I ran towards first base. I couldn’t turn my head to the right at all it hurt bad it sucks.
Now my back, I would get a nerve impingement in my right or left side it felt under my lat. same thing almost once or twice a year. I haven’t been to a doctor or anything ever. Not even massages. But for some reason I haven’t gotten either of those in the past two years.
Now it’s the top of my left forearm that’s giving me problems now. Sometimes I can’t train biceps or I feel it when training back. Now I wonder if it’s my back after all these years.

Goodness man... hate to hear that. Wishing you the best with the upcoming fusion. Now, you have me scared shitless. I guess I know what I need to do. Thank you for the info. Everyone for that matter thats provided input.

Brachial Plexus

Definitely sounds like a problem with the brachial plexus. There is pressure on one of the roots there probably. It is up in your lower neck or maybe even T1. Hopefully if you stop putting stress on that area it might heal up and the swelling go down. If you damaged something permanently then that is a problem. I would take a whole week off of any lifting at all. Only do cardio. Reevaluate in a week, see if you feel better. See a doc if there is a lot of pain.

Do you have insurance?

I work for a physiatrist and we see patient who have symptoms like you describe. You sound like you irritated a nerve in your neck for sure. I would refrain from lifting crazy weight for a while. See a doctor, even a primary care doctor to start. NSAIDs or oral steroids (like prednisone) are usually what they would prescribe first. Sometimes getting an MRI can be tricky with insurance yet this is what shows the soft tissue in your body like the nerves and the discs. MRIs can be telling yet don't always dictate your outcome.

The longer you wait to get treated the worse things can get. If you let this go for a long time things can get worse. So go to a doc.

This might sound stupid....

Active Release Technique (ART). When I have been messed up in the past it helped me.

What is up w8 ? Miss you pal .....you will have to pm me a life update ...hope you are awesome besides the injuries .....Yes , I can tell you over time you will tend to suffer various nerve compression's ,,,,It is why you see older guys legs and arms , especially forearms atrophy even if they are still training hard .....I have seen this for sure and it blows .....But you like to bang ...you train hard and always have had a power lifters mentality .......You can try some therapy as JT or maldorf [ both awesome dudes here btw .....I come here still cuz of folks like you three ] ......but I think the damage is done .....altering training can ease things up as well .......I have been playing with high volume and training fast as of late ....It has been a nice change and not my style at all .....

Anyway ....much love bro ...hang tough ....adapt and overcome

Training through or around the pain till things get better. And repeatedly sustaining the same injuries usually leads to more severe problems as time goes by. Or at least it has for me most of the time.

I herniated 2 discs a few years ago at C2 and C3... My left arm would go numb numerous times a day... A round of Prednisone and taking it easy for 6 months and the herniating decreased and it is back to normal...the nerves I compressed also controlled urination...I was standing in line at the bank and was unable to control urination...good thing my bladder was not full and I was wearing dark pants...nerves are nothing to mess with.......kvh

You have just convinced me to wear black pants at all times! Sorry that happened to you.

Many similar answers here, but good ones.
An impingement of the brachial plexus can happen in a few areas. Between C5, C6 is likely the way you say how it felt when it happened. But also can impinge between clavicle and first rib. Also compression happens between the pecs.
Its can be corrected by a good sports chiro who can also do the soft tissue work, ART, or a DPT who can also do the graston.
I see this regularly in my practice. Dont train through it. Lay off shrugging movements for a week or two, and seek treatment in the meantime. Its a simple fix for now, but can progress if left untreated. I also stress regular deep tissue work. Keeps the machine working better, and able to remain injury free for a lot longer

Graston was a god-send with my issues in the past.

True story! I finally found a good one, seeing once a week for now.... game changer for my hips and low back

Dude go see someone. I had a nerve problem in my back and just trained through the pain. Went well enough until I went to get out of bed one morning and physically could not.

Get it taken care of while you can still choose when and how.

And someone mentioned a sports medicine doc that might be worth looking into, might even be able to avoid the knife if you train smart.

Mine was for pulled and slight tears in the serratus muscle along the rib cage that turned into scar tissue. When it all started up...they actually wanted to take my gall bladder out even though I told them that wasn't it.

Wasted a lot of money in all these tests.....well maybe not as I did get an ultrasound of my abdominal area along with kidneys, CT of the same area with Pancreas, and a few other tests that gave ne a clean bill of health....and they still try to schedule me for gall bladder surgery.

Had a friend recommend a physiotherapist who pinpointed the issue right away.

I will say it was painful at first....but each treatment got easier and easier and now I am pain free!

you might have a "pinch nerve" at the neck area.
Thats what happened to me and i can felt my left side losing strength gradually over a few weeks.
Fortunately, i met my chiro who managed to fix it over a period of 6 months. I took a year to gain back my strength for my left side.
From what i know, this is caused by improper sleeping....you can google it.
Most cases resulted from sleeping.
Agreed with 11sh11...go check it out with a chiro.

My first stop would be to get a deep massage followed immediately by a good chiropractor and cold therapy. Repeat that once or twice a week for a while and see what happens. If not for the chiropractor I'd be an invalid. I beat my body pretty badly when I was young.

appreciate all the advice and replies...

Took 4 days off (forced) as my lower back area became so inflamed/tight/painful I could barely move for 2 days. Pain has dulled in my left arm but still present. Tried the gym today and my left side is so weak and unstable (upper body, legs fill fine oddly enough). Weights I normally toy with I couldn't even unrack. Grip in my left hand still way off. Ibuprofen has seemed to help with the inflammation.

Will make an appt. this week. I've been lucky enough to be able to work through most injuries but at 35, and the constant pounding of heavy weight over the years may have added up. It's how I enjoy to lift... and it really aggravates me to not be able to do so.

Thinking a sports chiro as 11 recommended as my experience with doctors has been much like rmtt explained...throwing darts at what 'may' be the answer.
Will most certainly look into graston, art, deep tissue etc. Can't imagine not being able to do what I like to do in the gym anymore and this time feels different.. I'll stay away from anything that compresses my spine and stick with volume for now (fucking boring). This will be the first time i haven't squatted weekly, usually 2x, since I was 19 I believe, so this will be an adjustment.

J- I'll be in-touch. Sorry I lost touch. No excuses. But, I miss ya man. Much love back at ya.

Everyone, I really appreciate the replies and advice
