new smith machine

wow, i hate smith machines because they restrict me too much and i end up getting hurt more on those than free weights, but this one looks really bad ass. i wish my gym would get one of these, i'd actually love to try it out.

that is one smart smith machine. I like it.

Intresting. Looks good, I wonder how much it costs.

Hoist actually makes a smith setup like this and I have in my home gym. With a 200lb stack, it ran $2000.

thats really nice....probably isnt good for a commercial setting though.

Very nice indeed. I only wonder if it is suited for more explosive and with heavier weights lifting since it seems to need some time to move but we wont know that until one of us actually goes at it :D

Wonder how stable it is loaded up with more than 2 or 3 plates a side?

I used one back in the early 90s/late 80s and it was ok. I used to use it for front squats only. I still prefer free weights really.

We have 2....

But we will have 3 all together once the construction is completely finished. I never dug the smith machine for squats due to it not moving with the natural mechanics of the body. However, I did them on this one and it moved very nicely. However, doing benching, both incline and decline is a pain due to the parallel sliding. It is hard to control the bar.

Also, it is great to do deadlifts on this. You can concentrate more on the form versus being concern about holding the weights.

is it stable with a load on it for say squats at like 3 plates on a side?, how are they over time?, seems to me you would run into more problems with all the moveing parts and such...

So far so good. I went up to 4, and it seem to be very stable. I don't know how good the equipment is over time, it has only been 2 months since we open. To address the last statement, the only time you truly run into problems is with shoulder press and incline bench press.

However, you can do barbell curls on it.

Very nice piece of machinery. I used one at my brothers gym before and it took me a while to figure it out that the bar was not a stationary one. But after a few minutes if was truely a nice piece of equipment on to do just about 60 to 70 percent of your work outs on. I especially loved it for seated presses and up right rows.

The gym i went to back in 1993 had one of these smith machines.
Thinking back it was bigger and more stable looking than this one.
I would load it with 400+ for lunge squats and it was smooth and
solid as a rock. I guess we were spoiled and didnt know it. The gym
owner said it cost something like 6,000 dollars ! (but it was commerical grade)
