NFL Combine - why do they bench press?

Scott Young

Scott Young has been a good friend and neighbor since elementary, he did more than 43 but like most have said they did not count them all. At BYU they told him, "You cant get any bigger" to that he said "watch me" haha he is a strong guy. Played his 5 years and retired, now he hunts and fishes all day. A bitter ex cougar once told me "Scott is proof you can bench your way to the NFL" So maybe bench does hold some weight with the head guys (pun intended)

Well

The problem is that a bench press measures a static strength.......your back against a non movable object.........in football it is about quickness and strength in " space".......not related to a bench press at all.......its about a
" punch" ....to measure that you would need the hammer strength machine where you just stand there and thrust your arms forward......this allows the coach to measure balance, position, punch strength, etc..........more realistic. Another question...........the 40 yard dash? Football is about run a few yards, move laterally, run a few more, back a few, laterally........on INSTINCT and MOVEMENT........not when YOU want to start moving. Here is what I propose......now remember, pads weight makes a difference.......put everyone in pads...helmets.......line them up.......snap a ball and they must start on the snap........40 yards against each other....this creates a realistic competition.........some people run faster chasing OR being chased.......football speed they call it.

I was looking at that exact chart too.

At the actual NFL COMBINE, they are usually pretty strict on reps so if a guy does high 40's, he is one strong son of a bitch. They have multiple coaches watching as well as one coach counting the reps and uncounting (a word?) if a player bounces it too much off his chest or doesnt fully lock out. Believe me...you can get away with A LOT MORE at your own school's pro day. When training for these endurance bench comps, combine coaches tell you to rep out as fast as possible and over accentuate the "pop" at the top to make it LOOK like you are fully locked out. Most of the time you want to not fully lock out the elbows or else your tri's will die before you hit 30.

Tank Sarge just did 53 reps with 225 lbs, I guess we need to move him to the top of this chart!:D

So what you mean is the Real Men start work tomorrow...completely unbiased opinion haha. I love this time of year with the combines and the draft, I almost get that rush of adrenaline that makes your nutsack tighten up ( no not really, no dude has ever had that effect on me lol)

haha,
I was a down lineman in HighSchool, mainly watched the blindside (left tackle and nose on defense, but played all spots, guard junior yr. and filled in at center here and there.) Just couldnt long snap haha.

wish I played in college, but then again the college that I went to had football the first year I was there and then they cut the program the following year, lol, so wish i went to a different school to play.

FN Hindsight.

Really not to sound arrogant or come off as a dick but at well under 200# right now at 42 I can do 50 @ 225 any day of the week.

This I would like to see

I too would like to see that. That would be one of the most impressive lifts for reps I have seen in my 30 years of powerlifting and BB. Dude you could win alot of money benching for reps. I win several shows, for money benching my weight for reps and I am 170 and do between 48 and 51. You would kick my ass if you weigh less than 200 and can do over 50 reps with 225. How many times can you do your body weight?

Im a tough old man too and if anyone is in my neck of the woods (ATL) i would love to show ya. Usually during my last set of bench we screw around and rep 225 for a comedown. Stop at 50 or so tri's give out.

i would love to see that!

why would anyone have to come to 'your neck of the woods' to see it? we have to fly to atlanta? its 2011 everybody and their mother has a cellphone with video. why not post a video of this for the members here to see. after all you can do it any day of the week, so i cant imagine it would interfere with your normal training.

Ok Stewie we have butt heads a few times. How about I bet you $1000 that I can do 50 reps of 225 at a BW of 190-195lbs.? Then I will take the time out of my day to have it professionally recorded at my gym with current WR holding power lifters or some current Atlanta Falcons? Will that suit you? I have nothing to prove. I was A WR holder for 6 years. But if it will get you off my back about everything and shut you up i will do it. Or I will challenge anyone current boardmember here for $1000 to outbench me raw in reps at BW-or a max at a catchweight of 185. Take the challenge someone please. I live for competition. I'll be waiting. Balls in your court-as they say.

i would love to see that!
