No one poses like this anymore! Dave Pulcinella on stage in 1996

We dug this out of the archives and it's a good example of something few BBs, either amateur or pro, take the time to do these days...a smoothly choreographed routine that actually follows the music.

There is no "down time", walking lazily around the stage trying to figure out what the next pose will be or, god forbid, begging for applause.

I really miss the artistry of those days.

Nice!

It's always exciting for me to watch the old vids of bodybuilder posing. It gives me goosebumps when I watch Very well put together routines that match the music. It's exciting and I think it was a huge reason why bodybuilding has lost a lot of interest by mainstream public. It's very bland now and only the guys who are really into bodybuilding actually care about the shows. These days it's about Instagram and what the guys are doing in there personal lives versus the actual show.

Tell me how many shows and routines are on Instagram and YouTube. Look at the likes and views on rich pianas bull shit videos versus the views and likes on actual routines at shows by Bodybuilders. It sucks really but people chase the money and what's popular. I think bodybuilding is an art form. Stomping around hit 20 most musculars back to back in a routine is not art. It's silly looking and it's just plain boring

my opinion

Mohamed Makkawy – Mr. Olympia 1983 . . . I saw him
pose once and the women were clapping more than the
men. Just beautiful.

Ed Corney was very noteworthy also as is Francis Benafatto
but he, Francis, was a bit too dramatic and self-absorbed for
my taste.

In retrospect, what all these bodybuilders had in common
besides wonderfully choreographed posting routines was
they were not afraid to hold their poses for a ‘long’ time.
Oh . . . and they smiled. No stupid faces or tough guy looks.

Its funny how hard every one of these dudes look compared to pros today.

I love a good mass monster but, I believe conditioning is king.

Samir considers Makkawy as the greatest posers of all time. Love Makkawy huge fan I am.

Also when Ed Corney posed it was sooo beautiful . Sometimes even without music , just pure art and one wouldn't want to blink an eye while watching these gents, to not miss a transition !

There was no stupid 50 cent rapping in the background and there was no disgusting ass wiggling either (which btw is considered 'having fun' on stage nowadays.) How times have changed.

Makkawy is legendary
The video gave me chills. Wish I could have seen this live.

Dave's posing also very cool, very snappy, perfectly done. but not as stylish or classy as the older guys. Also his gyno in the vid is distracting to me.

I have seen this routine countless times and it still gives me goosebumps.

I would mimic Makkawy, Ed , labraba , frank Zane and pose in between training & after in front of tall gym mirrors in lights and hold those poses to build endurance and transition & feel comfortable for the person looking at me. Looking back now I looked like shit as a kid with not having enough muscle in the right places to pull these hard hard difficult poses but hey I enjoyed every bit of it lol . I wouldn't trade those innocent days for anything.

Nice story man, sounds like you're a happy man with a rich past . I kind of agree with what you said about not being able to pull off their poses cause you looked bad, kind of like how I feel when l pose lol. But not in the past, also more like in the now hahaha. Lots of work still to be done!!

Mike you are right. When most come out they hit most muscular with their tongues out, over and over hit the double bi and then put hand to ear for crowd to cheer. No routine what so ever. Dave was a beast.

a bit off topic, Makkawy

Sorry to the OP (Dave), a bit of topic here but interesting I hope.

Aside from seeing him pose I did see him walking
down the street in Venice Beach years ago. For
some reason a few things come to my simple mind . . .
he was not very tall, his posture was perfect, he
walked with grace and dignety, and his ankles were
thick. (Don’t ask me why I remember that part, the
ankles.) He was in a loose fitting short sleeve
button down shirt, long shorts and carrying a gym
bag. He was probably on his way to Word Gym
(where I had just some from) . . . I regret not
turning around and following him (not stalking)
but I was on my way to someplace, who knows
where, probably not important.

If memory serves me here, I remember reading years
ago when he was being trained by Gironda, he would
train up to four (yes, 4) times a day. Different body parts
of course.

Vince had all kinds of theories that he would try out on
his members or victims I would say. I met Vince once
years ago when I visited his gym. He seemed like a
reasonable fellow to me, but then again, I did not train
there and my encounter with him was very brief but
memorable.

At one point in time, I had a book (actually, I had all
Vince's "booklets") about his training, by Gironda and
co-authored by Robert Kennedy. It was called Unleashing
the Wild Physique or something like that. Again, I think
it had a fair amount of info on Makkawy's training and
some superb photos. I do remember Makkawy was on
the cover.

Back on topic . . . well sort of . . . one does need a certain
amount of muscle and most certainly a ‘type’ of a physique
that lends itself to a more, artistic, creative and graceful
way of posing. Not sayin’ all bodybuilders can’t do this but
some can clearly get away with it better than others. And
those that do, as Arnold said . . . ‘that is bodybuilding.’

yeah ! IMO, makkaway was the best poser of all time.

Current good poser should be Kai Greene ?

Santi Aragon 2014 Nationals routine is up there with one of my fav routines I've seen live. Kid crushed it. Not tacky, just confident and graceful.

looks like Pulcinella copied much of my routine from a couple years earlier when i was competing.... course i didn't look quite as good or move as well as him....
