I believe I have an Ignition coil going bad on my 2005 Scion Xb, I replaced the 3rd I.C. back in may of this year. Today same lights popped up. SCV, Check Engine, Traction control, all lit up.

My question is: how can I tell which one of the four coils is acting up this time? Or can it poissibly be the 3rd I.C. again? Anyway to tell which one is going bad without replacing all four?

Thank you

Hit up Pharm Fed, BOOM. He's a beamer tech. He should be able to help you out.

Cool, thank you

the traction control light should come on if its a ic.......if you can get the numberical fault code from the on board diagnostics i can tell you alot more.

I wish I could get it to a place where they can give me this code. This was a suggestion back in may one of buddies gave me, but no one seems to want to tell me the fault code for free. LOL

Is there a handy device one of the auto supply stores sells to get this code? Pep boys, auto zone, R&S strausse?

autozone will scan it for free and give you the code.....is the abs light on as well?

Go to autozone or advanced auto or similar store and ask them to read the fault codes, which they will do for free usually. If you have a bad ignition coil on cylinder 2 for example, there will be a misfire code for cinder 2. Should be a P0302. Clear that fault out and switch the ignition coil from cylinder 2 and another cylinder. When the check engine light comes back on, see which cylinder the misfire is on. If it followed the coil you know you have a bad coil, if not you know it's something else.

If you really want to be thorough you could swap plugs and injectors too. So for example you have misfire cylinder 2.
Swap ignition coils from cyl 2 and cyl 1. Swap spark plugs from cyl 2 and cyl 3. Swap injectors from cyl 2 and cyl 4. Then depending on where it is you'll know which of those three things is bad. If it stays on cyl 2 you have something else going on.

Let us know how it works out.

No ABS, just trac off

awesome thank you

and all that are helping, it's frustrating knowing I can do it my self if I just knew whats wrong. I hate paying if I dont have to. But when I do I appreciate that there are professionals out there.

well.....if it is an ignition coil...????
it will have a dead miss, and run like shit (3 cylinders)

if you read the code (with a reader) or scan tool...
it will either be P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304

whichever it is.....(if it even really is a misfire code at all)

it will (more than likely) be one of the four...
cylinder 1 being the closest to the belt....then 2, 3, 4 down the line

hope this helps

Yeah as all stated get it scanned and then you'll know what coil is misfiring. Just had to do all this with my lexus. To think it was running like shit for my gf and she didnt tell me. I get in, see it, found out what one, bought the coil for 20 bucks, replaced, and was given unlimited sex for like a week...

So fix that damn coil bro!

like they said get a code reader or autozone can do it for you

I have similar situation, got 1 new coil pack and switched them all out one by one with new one until code clears.

I would change all of the coils anyway. Seems whenever I change one, the others start to act up shortly afterwards.

Awesome, you guys rock! That's why this is the best board ever!

Group hug anyone????? :D

This made me LOL as my buddy has a Excursion with a V10 he always brags about, and has repalced 7 of the 10 coils within the last 2 years :D $$$!!!

I had a 4.6 T-bird that ran like shizzie and would cut out, and a simple plug change smoothened that out and cleared the CEL.

waynaferd......love the sig bro! :D

UPDATE: went to AutoZone, they scanned my car for free. Turns out it was I.C. #2 this time. Purchased the last one in stock. Called pepboys, and no one around me has 2 more in stock. CRAP. Told the guy I'll be back friday to purchase the same code reader he used for my car which found the problem in about 30 seconds. NICE! :D

Got home, replaced the coil. BUT, lights were still on, on the dash board. Then I remembered I had to pull the EFI fuse and reset the system, and after doing so, all lights are now off and car is running like a champ again. Feels so friggin good to do my own work on my car. Gives me a huge sense of accomplishment. (i know i'm a huge fairy) :D

going to pick this up on friday, this is the Actron CP9580. It's about $250.00 but worth every penny. So again, million thanks to everyone!

It's a good idea to purchase a scanner Boom, but you can get one that's plenty capable for a lot less then $250. Congrats on fixing the problem.

Also, you will be able to clear the codes with the scanner. You won't have to pull any fuses.

Glad you got it resolved bro.

Bro don't pull any fuses, you can erase codes with that scanner in a minutes time. It's very simple after you read your code it will give you the option to erase.
