O/T: Digital Cameras

Im looking to get a basic digital camera BUT im pretty clueless when it comes to these things..

Any input or help?

Ive been reading a bunch of reviews online, but they send me all over the place.

Whats important to you in a camera?
How much do you want to spend?

If size isn't a factor and you can afford it you can't go wrong with DSLR, they really are a world better than even the best point and shoots.

It's for my girlfriend, so it has to be slightly durable but besides that it doesn't have to be too fancy.. Somewhere in the $300 range.

She likes taking pictures of animals and outdoorsy things.

The following link will take you to Steves-Digicams, where there is a section on "the best cameras" by category. Does your girlfriend want a very small, compact camera? Does she want a lot of zoom? Always look for optical zoom, not digital zoom. Will she be taking photos in low light conditions? Look for cameras that do well in high iso modes.

For your price range a dSLR is out of the question. But there are very good compact cameras with a lot of features that will probably be just fine. Good luck!
