O/T - I have shingles

That happened to me when I first started teaching! I had never had chicken pox, and at the age of about 29 I came down with chicken pox and felt like I was going to die. I missed 3 weeks of work and after about 1 week I developed shingles on top of the chicken pox! I had both conditions at the same time. I went to a dermatologist for help and she gave me a strong and very expensive antiviral oral med. She said it was the worse case she had ever seen. It was so bad that she snuck me in through the back door of her office so that none of the other patients would see me!! That bad.

When I had the pox my fever was about 102-104 for 7-8 days straight and then it finally started to come down. I was wearing: a leather coat with liner, a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and a knit cap inside our home and I was still freezing cold (felt like it) but my body temp was over 102.

I thought back to the school and I remember our computer teacher looking like he had shingles on his face. The week or so before I came down with it I had been in his lab. I think it is highly contagious.

Dang maldorf I'm right there with ya. He'll I hide for weeks mine was that bad. At the time some new med had just hit the market and after taking that my hair started to thin. Yeah shingles not test made me go bald lol

Stress brings out the virus and causes the eruption.

26 years old is very young to have shingles. Either you are really stressing your body through dieting, workouts, work, etc or your immune system is very weak.

Antivirals will not help once the rash has appeared. They have only been shown to decrease the duration of symptoms if taken right before the rash appears (the prodromal period).

Only thing that really helped me once the rash was all out was to take pain killers prescribed for that intense pain. Feels like someone is pouring acid on you!

Wow, on losing the hair. Did it come back later?

Yeah, I hid too for about 2 weeks or so. I didn't like going out in public because it looked like I had leprosy or something! Felt like a total pariah.

I did have to go back to work teaching though after about 3 weeks, the fever was gone and I had burned through so much sick time. Teaching from home doesn't work well either! The kids were grossed out by me !

Is it worth it to get the vaccine if you never had shingles (but know you've had chickenpox)? Holy crap, what you guys are talking about sounds like a red nightmare. I don't need that **** ever. I might have to educate myself. Sounds worse than HSV!

My face was the worst. It felt like some nut had thrown a container of acid on my face. I would look into that vaccine.

Im scared mine could come back someday. Shingles can reoccur cant it?

Yeah. Shingles just fuckin' rocks.

Wow, I had it like that too in my eye. More of my face was covered though. Having chicken pox at the same time sucked too, I had the swelling inside my mouth and throat.

Yes, it can come back indefinitely. It's the chickenpox virus still in your system - for life. It recurs as shingles. It's impossible to have a simultaneous breakout of shingles and chickenpox. You could have the hallmark symptoms of both but basically, you got chickenpox.... BAD. The recurrence is called shingles (they're the same thing).

Varicella Zoster (chickenpox) enters the nerve cell where it lies dormant for life and resurfaces commonly as Herpes Zoster (shingles). But it's one and the same thing. It's a form of herpes.

Other disturbing facts I read:

Possibly 1 in 4 women carry HSV2 (genital herpes)
Possibly 1 in 5 men carry HSV2
Estimated 90% of the population carries HSV1 (oral herpes)

The catch is, you can get either on either. So don't be stupid and say, "She has genital herpes so we'll just go down on each other," and don't say, "I just have oral herpes so I can down on her."

Because you can get gential HSV1 and oral HSV2. Shingles is still contagious (highly actually) but only to people who have never been exposed to or vaccinated for chickenpox.

The more ya know, ya know?

got shingles at 25. not bad just on the shoulder and side. the stinging sucks. does anyone know why it is always on the right side of the body?

I Never Had Shingles...WTF

So I went to see a skin specialist today. I'd scheduled the appointment back when I had really bad athletes foot.

Turns out I never had athletes foot or the shingles. I was looked at by NPs at work and didn't get seen by my PCP until several weeks after the NPs made that diagnosis.

I've not ever had good luck with NPs. If you can, ALWAYS see a doctor. But anyway...

I saw her and she looked at my feet and said there were no signs of a fungal infection and that the skin issue's pattern didn't match athletes foot. She looked at my "shingles" and highlighted the fact that it didn't travel along one nerve. I also have recently been breaking out in hives all over my body with no change in diet/training/supplementation/weather/clothing/etc/etc.

She said this was a "tricky" problem to diagnose and took a chunk of the "shingles" area to send to pathology for a biopsy. She said this issue most likely started with the foot issue but I have no idea what it might be. It could be eczema she said but it could be something more serious. She prescribed this topical anti-inflammatory cream and pregnisone?

Anyone dealt with eczema before? Is it a lifelong issue?

I guess the symptoms and spread of hives can be treated which might cure the entire thing and if not will at least help until the pathology comes back.
