My dad's dr. told him that new studies have found that large doses of vitamen E have been very dangerous. They have even been linked to heart problems. He said that even the amounts in multi vits are too much, especially since its fat soluble and you absorb it all. Apparently 25iu's is the most that should be taken per day. I take close to 1000iu daily. Anyone else hear about the recent studies about this?
 
This is true, however; they are still speculating on mg/day but the current #'s are good to follow (not sure of them exactly.) It mainly deals with vitamins A and E, as far as toxicity levels are concerned these are the main ones.. It isn't really good to take megadoses (by megadoses, I mean MEGA doses) of any vitamins, but even worse are minerals. Vitamins A,D,E, and K are lipid soluble vitamins, and are often times the vitamins studied in these situations. A and D are actually essential for hormones, while K is very hard to store in the body and is easily ridded from the system daily. (this is why K is less of a concern). just some info.

Vitamins are toxic in high doses. There really is no need for them if we were eating like we should and not having burger king 3 times a day we would get what we needed. Also there's a diffrence between man made and natural vitamins that we get from fruits and vegetables. I know natures design is what it should be.

Yes, exactly, and don't forget some of the most important vitamins that we get from animals along with the plants that you mentioned. Good post, this is the point everyone needs to understand. I am a firm believer in a multivitamin though as a supplement.

I take a pharmaceutical grade multi-vitamin and take scads of anti-oxidants.

How many of us eat 7 daily servings or ORGANIC friuits and vegetables? I don't think I've done this more than a couple of times in my lifetime. The food we eat today does not contain the nutrients of the old days. Plus - we have MUCH MORE environmental stress placed on our bodies that large doses of antioxidants (like vit C) will help - that's a proven fact. Air pollution, smoking or just being around people that smoke, stress, chemical exposures, the list goes on and on that is attacking our bodies - not to mention intense weight training!
 
Yep, it would be damn near impossible to get all of the vitamins and mineral needed in the amounts that a bodybuilder requires from food alone. Foods these days are nutrient depleted from overcultured farm land. Did you ever notice how occasionally you might eat a piece of fruit that is full of flavor, sweet and just damn good. Then, most of the time the same type of fruit tastes like juicy cardboard? That's nutrient depletion for you. Taking a high quality multi-vitamin with NATURAL vitamins, not synthetic, is a good idea for everyone, especially athletes.

As for the vitamin e, all I can say is that when I'm on 1000 iu's of vit e per day, my skin is healthier, my eyes look brighter, and it seems to help with keeping me from getting so winded. That's how I make my decisions.

Ya Greensource is the bomb made from whole food concentrates or products and dosed so a normal serving size is 3 tablets a day and I take 6 a day.

yes Phil you are correct....

Usually 400iu is the max I have seen prescribed. :eek:
