O/T Question for computer gurus

It is a back up program that you just let it run (read manual) but like I said you need to have an external hard drive, like $100, try to get 500gb or 1TB if you can. It will need a lot of room depending on your current HD size. Lets say you have a 320GB computer it will probably need close to 200GB (thats what mine does but I do not havbe my entire 320gb used up on my laptop) to make the image so you need a good size external hard drive. It is just a fancy back up system that enables you to reinstall your entire system as you had it the day you did the image/back up.

Well unfortunately my computer is so outdated already and I bought it in 2007. Its a Dell XPS 200. I'm thinking about getting a new one with a TB harddrive. This one only has 70gb and its almost full. Must be from all the videos and pictures on it. Not much RAM either at just 512 mb. I know the sweet spot is like 4gb to run all the new MS Office programs. I guess for now though I will see about getting all my drivers and then formatting it.

I think Dell didn't give me all my drivers with my computer. Do I need to reload all the ones for my harware like my video and sound card?

Damn virus every weekend? Better tell him to stop downloading all that infected porn, lol. :D

HAHA :D
He has two girls (adopted).
They made a mess of things on a daily basis.

If the re-install doesn't config your HW you can go to the DELL support page for most drivers. Yours might still be available.

yep,, I have all these installed on both my computers.. havent had any problems since....

No formatting required

All you need and say bye bye to any virus on your computer. You should be able to download all these from cnet.com

THESE ARE ALL FREE

-- AVG virus scanner

-- **broken link removed**
--Adaware

--CCcleaner

--Malwarebytes

And the MOST important one

** Combofix ** --follow the instructions exactly

Thats all you need to do and ANY virus will be long gone...

Yeah that's what my son did. He downloaded something on one of my other computers that I had fixed but then did the same thing on this one and now it's infected. I should of had a password on it so he couldn't screw with it.

ok. I'm assuming you have the windows reinstall disk from Dell. You can go here :Dell - Drivers and Downloads ...put in your service tag number (its a sticker on the Dell tower case itself, it says service tag) Choose your correct operating system and download drivers. The main ones you'll need is the network card (NIC) driver, Video driver, chipset, audio. The most important is the network card. As long as after you format and reinstall windows you can get back on the internet, you are good to go.
Most of what you need backed up is in my documents. (pics, music, videos, etc.) Any folders on your desktop you created should be backed up also. You can't back up programs such as microsoft office, etc.
What you can try first though is that great advice with those free programs to download, install, and run. I personally use those also and most of the time it cleans it up. Some viruses are stubborn and can only be removed with a format and reinstall.
The Linux Ubuntu is a great idea also as I used that discretely on my laptop. Most people can get by with Ubuntu.
The problem with system restores (which I never use them) is that viruses attach themselves in the restore files and location, so when you restore you still have viruses.
If you don't have a Dell Windows disk, hit me up. I can walk you through it all if you need. Its great to have a 2nd computer with you while you are working on your XPS.

Sounds good bro, I will try to clear it first with those free programs. I have the disc for Windows 7 from my laptop but I don't think my system will support it (not enough memory) I need my Word disc too or I won't be able to do shot with e-mails, etc.

Awesome, thanks for posting brother. I will try that first before formatting my C drive.

I tried the AVG virus scanner so far and it cleaned all but two viruses I had. I guess I'll try some of the other ones to see if they do it. I'll probably have to format it I suspect.

Get Malwarebytes (it is free) and do a full scan, it will take a while but may find the problem.

Yeah I will try that. The AVG scan and the combofix didn't work. I still have 2 viruses on it. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Sorry to get off topic but I know there are a lot of knowledgeable bros on here that know a lot about computers. I've been trying to get my gf's IT guy at work to clean the virus that my son put on my computer but he's always too busy.

I figured I could fix the virus on my computer if I just formatted my C drive, right? My problem is that I don't have all of the drivers (mainly Windows XP, and MS Word) if it erases it too. Will formatting my hard drive erase any programs or my XP operating system? I know to backup my files that I want saved but is there anything else important I should know or have to reinstall once I format my C drive? Will this clear the virus I have? Thank you in advance as always for the much needed help......I1

do not format your hard drive, it wipes everything and is unnessary. this is what all the so called computer 'experts' do to fix a problem at places like the geek squad.

what you want is to fix the problem not replace everything. imagine your furnace is bad, and the 'expert' comes over and says 'replace the house' - no logic

what you need to do is find what kind of problem you are facing. is it a virus? malware? adware? spyware? a malicious script?

these thing usually have 1 thing in common, they are almost always associated with and executable file (*.exe) and/or registry entries. the really clever one will be a command file (*.com) and be hidden within a service host file (those svchost.exe you see when you open task mamager)

usually the executable file is stored within windows/system or system32. show hidden files and sort by date, see a relatively new executable file?

sometimes the program will self install in your browser, you can manually delete it by accessing advanced browser setting or opening your browsers folder and looking for executables, or in your administrater folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp.

another thing to do is use a program called hijack this. its extremely effective for manual removal of many browser hijacks. be vary careful you can totally f**k up your system if you delete the wrong thing

Virus issues

I think most everything mentioned is good , only for some reason I had problems with this new free version of AVG so I went back to the trial version of Kaspersky internet security 2010 and it found and got rid of 15 trojans and 2 adware viruses and think you should give this a try along with malwarebytes that found a whole bunch of adware crap also. This is just 3 weeks after I reformatted my drive with the dell discs I have , and use something similar to ccleaner called auslogics registry cleaner that I think is good .

I deleted AVG after I ran it. It was running really slow with it. I heard Kaspersky is good. I might just go back to the free one from Time Warner. I should be ok, don't download as much porn now, lol.

Those programs cleaned a lot it looks like but I still have two viruses on there. I'm working on getting the drivers to format it. I don't think it should be much of a problem to reload everything. Do you have to enter any special commands when you load your disks, or do you just follow the prompts?

When loading your driver disks, you simply follow the prompts. Very simple, but can take awhile.

However, as others have mentioned, this most likely is not necessary. It is not impossible to locate the virus in your computer if you look hard enough (see above), and nor is it impossible to remove it with some good programs (free). The only programs I run on my machine are: CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, and Super Anti-Spyware. Between those, I've rid myself of many bugs and trojans.

But, if you are set on reformatting, then by all means do it. Your computer will run just like new once you have it up and running! :)

I tried all those programs but it didn't remove the viruses I had. Believe me, I don't like doing more work than I have to. Formatting is the last option for me.

I just ran Malwarebytes again and it came up with 2 files infected in memory processes. How do you erase that? I think you have to format it if it wouldn't quarantine it.

Malwarebytes puts the viruses in the quarantine and within a day or 2 click on delete and they should be gone. I would install kaspersky 2010 anti- virus or the internet security and run that with malwarebytes with the computer being in safemode if you haven't done this . For safemode , turn off your computer and just as it comes back on start hitting F8 repeatedly and you hear a beeping sound and a bunch of letters and numbers go up and come to a black screen and arrow up to safe mode , click enter and go from there . Reinstalling can be a real pain if you never done it , but the first disc is easy to follow , it's the driver part with the 2nd disc for me.

If the viruses can't be quarantined and don't want to try kaspersky or another program like spyware terminator that's good you may have to take it to a computer shop like I have. Where I live a computer shop I've gone to will reformat for $60.00 .
