O/T: Questions about traveling to Mexico City

I am planning to see a friend in Mexico City. Never been there before so I am a unsure as I hear some negative things happening there though trying not to look at the negatives.

1) How safe is Mexico city compared to Northern Mexico where I hear that is where is majority of problems are today? What are places you recommend to visit in and around the city and places stay away from?

2) Good places/resorts to visit on either coast?

Im pretty sure if you stay at a resort and stay on the resort you should be good.

I know a girl who went there during highschool for a study abroad thing and she told me she went out in the normal parts of the town she was at to bars and what not. She said everything was cool and nothing happened (this girl is very sheltered)

Mexico city is completely fine, if your a high net worth individual having a small PSD group is always recommended. Kidnappings are decent business down there but have been extremely minimized over the past few years.

Other than that no different than any other major metropolitan city, be smart when traveling and don't go into very low socio economic areas and you will be fine.

Mexico City is a very rich, awesome city. Much safer than the northern border cities. Yeah, you get 20+ million people in one place and there could be some shit, just like anyplace. Use your head, just like you would in any big city. Don't dress like you have money (no expensive watches clothes etc.) and stay away from the iffy poor areas. Reforma, Zona Rosa, the central zone are good places. Prepare for traffic from hell and it could take you hours to get anywhere if you get a gridlock. Let your friend handle transportation for you. Don't even think about renting a car.

My friend and his girlfriend just went to Mexico City a week or 2 ago. He said they walked all over the city with no problems. He said the danger is really exaggerated.
