Hey I have been on a conventional mattress all of my life. Never been a solid sleeper. Due to a couple of bad shoulders and herniated discs my sleep has suffered. Anyway the wife wants a new bedroom set so I am exploring a new mattress as well The two I have been looking at is the Tempurpedic, thats the one made out of some sort of memory foam that is backed by Nasau astronauts and the Sleep Number bed, the one that lets one adjust the firmness on each sideof te bed. Any of you have any of the new technoogy beds? Are they worth the investment?

You will be fine with either one. Haven't heard any complaints about neither. Personally I would go with the sleep number so you and your wife can adjust the level to your personal comfort. Again, either should be good.

I layed down in a sleep number at the store and I gotta tell you it was pretty damn amazing, we are getting ready to buy one.

Just bought one...

I just bought a new mattress about a month ago. GREAT investment.

The bottom line, IMHO, is finding what is comfortable for you. I tried various different memory foam configurations (ala the Temperpedic) and just didn't like the feel. It just wasn't comfortable for me. Also, kind of awkward when you move to reposition, as the foam creates a sort of resistance until you sink into it. (On the other hand, if you're sleeping well, you shouldn't be moving around much.)

I went to the bed stores 3 times. The last time I went, I was there for nearly 3 hours. I would lie down on a bed for at least a few minutes to try it out. The one I ended up getting, I actually took a 20 min pseudo-nap in.

My advice would be to set aside an entire afternoon or morning to do the shopping, so you can really try them out. Bring the same pillow with you from bed to bed and try each of them out. Of course, lie in the position you sleep in.

Also, wear what you normally wear when you're sleeping, so that's the same. For me, I sleep in the nude, so I just threw on my robe and headed to the bed stores....

JUST KIDDING... :D

Seriously, though, I was pretty sure I had the right bed when I got up off it and had no pain in my SI joints, which almost always hurt when I stand up.

I ended up getting a Kingsdown model. They have a device (it was in the store I went to) - a pressure-sensitive mattress hooked to a computer - that makes measurements of you and determines which of their models would be right. Basically its a matter of how heavy you are. If you're really light, you can go with a pretty fluffy softer model. If you're heavier, you get a firmer mattress. I was pretty dubious, but I tried out all 4 of their standard mattresses and the computer put me on the right one. Although lying on the softest one felt really damn cozy at first, after being there for a while, I could feel my back and SI joints aching.

My mindset was always that the softer the bed the better, but after testing them out, it was pretty apparent that a really soft (or too hard) mattress would have ended up giving me more pain.

Nice thing was, the sales guy used the Kingsdown mattress test info. to point me in the direction of comparable mattresses from other brands. (He uses the Kingsdown system to classify other mattresses - just easier that way.)

Of course he made the valid point that we (Americans) will spend $40,000 on a sports car that we spend 2 hours in each day, but won't spend a few $1000 on a nice mattress that we spend 6-8 hr in a day...

I agree with your cost analogy. I figure if I live another 30 years 10 of them will be spent in bed. (8 years sleeping and 2 years fucking) LOL
So I am willing to spend a couple of bucks. I will take your advice and do some diligent shopping and testing for comfort.

My wife and I bought a Tempurpedic last year. We both love it big time. I used to wake up all night with shoulder pains because I sleep on my side and put a lot of pressure there. I have none of that now and I don't toss and turn nearly as much as I used to. She likes it better too because when I do move, none of the motion or bounce is transferred to her. The quality of my sleep is WAY better. I will never go back to an old inner spring mattress. It wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny for us.

i bought a Sealy Posturpedic pillow top a few months back.. great bed i really like it but its a little soft, i might of gotten something a little firmer had a gotten a chance to sleep on it for a week or so.

my "trips" to the bed store were just that.. i went about 4 times before i finally decided on this one... im not saying its not 100000x better than my old bed, but i think i would like a little firmer.

also, dont forget beds are important, but its just as important to get some good pillows. i was laying in bed last week at 8:30 and my f'in pillow kept getting on my nerves so i threw on some pants and headed to jc pennys home store and bought 2 new pillows.. haha..

I like the Memory Foam. They have differnt ones on the net. Tempurpedics brand is a little to hard. Ther are a few palces on the net the wholesale memory foam out to the name brand companies.

i had a memory foam for about 1 month and had to sell it... if you weight over 200 lbs it can be an issue as i sleep on my side which felt like i was on a hammock..

i bought a therapedic extra firm with pillow top and wish i bought it 5 years ago...

i know many or most guys sleep well on a memory foam and that is great.. my best advice is to go into a store and ask to laydown on your bed of choice and ask to be left alone and take a nap and see how it feels and if a nap is out then grab a book and read for an hour and see how that feels..

good luck and the sleep number would be next on my list to buy.
