Off topic - what is the usual mode of payment at restaurants and shops in US?

I swipe a card, no idea what apple or Google pay are. Also keep cash on hand.

As for tips I rarely eat out but always be generous. The exception would be nice days places like subway, smoothie king etc now ask if you want to leave a tip...ill pass on that. I'm not tipping what I consider fast food...next McDonalds and burger king will be asking for a tip.

Funny my oldest son moved with his wife to Germany his a sergeant in the military and works in cyber security for the military. And I tell him. Man I can’t see myself trying to get use to driving on the wrong side of the road if I lived there I’m sure I would turn into the wrong way a bunch of time thinking I’m in the US

Apple and google pay is just tapping your phone on the pay screen and it come out of the account you have linked to it.

I hate it I never use that. I may be wrong but I feel that’s too easy for someone to hack it and empty you out

Its only really Britain, aus, japan and handful of ex-colonies that drive on the left. Aus for obvious reason that UK still held significant influence there until fairly recently. Japan cause we helped build their trains during Industrial era

It all dates back to the age of knights - your right hand would be your sword hand so you would pass on the left for self-defence. Ridiculous reason to keep it up now considering right hand traffic is generally more effective when 90% of nation is right handed.... But we're britain - not a lot of things we do make sense to cold logic!

I'm in the states...and i agree all these new things...id be afraid of them getting hacked. My paycheck goes into my bank account then I just swipe a credit card wherever I go, then just pay it off every month to build credit and get points..been doing it for years. I thought most did this? Lol. I guess im just old fashioned but it seems so simple, what advantage does Google or apple pay give me?.not sarcasm..genuinely wondering...never even thought about them to be honest lol.

I can say my credit score doing it this way is silly high..like when I bought a car the dude said its as high as it gets...I guess from paying bills all on auto pay, buying a new car every 3 years..and just paying everything with a credit card and then paying it back. I do have a debit card too but I only use that at an atm. I'm in my 40s I feel like around the late 2000s we shifted away from cash to credit cards...all.this other stuff I never tried lol

I'm early days of contactless phone payments there was cases of people using readers to charge peoples phones as they walked past as they set the sensitivity way too high on phones. That was addressed within a few months and now phone payments are generally considered most secure - your phone is locked; unlike your wallet - your phone doesn't display the card/account/sort numbers and be stolen via hi res photo. Etc

The credit card this is interesting and very "American" - the culture around Credit Cards here is much more reserved; they are generally used as a line of credit when short term(3-12 month) credit is required but rarely would someone use them as a default and pay off monthly as per American culture.

We're generally very untrusting of credit here though

Apple Pay creates a “dummy” card each time you use it to hide your real cards information. Much more secure than tapping your actual card.

Yea I’m older than you but I’m the same way. I’m old school. I’m not into all the new payment stuff. I stick to CC and cash.
