Oh man, your thought? (GENERAL COVID THREAD!)

People say the medical care is "free" but nothing is free. Wage earners have to pay that in the form of high taxes. Our taxes in the US are quite a bit lower. I'm fine with our system the way it is now. I've had good care with my issues.

Of course. In the UK I paid tax every month. Plus in the US if you have good insurance you are gtg. My gf pays $500 per month for her insurance which is in the low range so it's very expensive here (private care). Although it's also nice knowing in the UK if you are in a big accident and are in hospital for a long time you don't have to worry about money or insurance paying out etc. There are definitely pro's and con's for every system. Most people will probably prefer their own countries way as well because that's what they are used to. In both systems many also take advantage as well with some people simply being a constant drain (always taking and never giving back). Although the later is another thread in itself!

There's pros and cons of each healthcare system. It's just how it is. And it really depends on how you want to frame it.

In the US, we pay for ABOVE AVERAGE CARE. That's why it's expensive. If you get told you have 2 weeks to live....you can go find a better doctor and get a different/same diagnosis. Basically, you pay for the type of service and quality you want. My sister-in-law has breast cancer that spread to her brain. If this was a another country...there would be 1 maybe 2 courses of action there. But in our system, if you have the funds to explore other options, you can do so. She happens to have the funds to look for other alternatives and it's helping save her life. I'm not sure someone in a universal healthcare system would have that ability.

In other countries, you might pay less on a universal healthcare package but the quality MIGHT (not a sure thing) might suffer. The sick and ill are all lumped up as one. You don't get better treatment based on what you have in your pocket. Ton of other points too.
Healthy people pay for other people's medical care, etc

ALSO VERY different incentives for Doctors too. There is a reason why the most skilled doctors from all over the world come to the US. Because they are paid and paid well for those skills.

Dont mean to throw the thread off track. Just wanted to chime in as everyone agree, including me, how fucking expensive healthcare is.
When I was 21, I rolled my Ford Explorer down the freeway while going 90mph. WAS NOT wearing a seatbelt and was ejected out the front windshield. Broke my back, hip, completely scalped me. God knows what my parents paid for that shit. So looking at that expense plus seeing what my sister-in-law is going through is kind of both sides of the spectrum for me.

yeah there is not going to be some utopia, my recent situation is i needed surgery, i made an appt with a specialist i got in to see him in 2 weeks ( i could have gotten in sooner ), during appt he said lets get an mri, i scheduled it for 2 weeks out ( i could have gotten it sooner ) went 1 week after mri to discuss, during this appt he said yes lets do the surgery, i could have gotten it the following week but i delayed it for about 2 weeks, so i could have literally gotten everything done including the surgery in about 4 weeks or less, i have corresponded with people in other countries with the same thing and their wait to get the surgery has been anywhere from 6 months-a little over 12 months, some of them waited about 6 months just to get an mri, no thank you.

My ICD battery ran this winter and I had to get a new one. Surgery was done within 2weeks. I felt like that was fast. I was very glad. The battery had a good 6 months left in it, so they didn't have to rush. That's in the US.

I cannot really recall how it worked back in the US, and that has probably changed since I left in 2007.

Here is how it works in Japan:
  • The system is nationalized, any physician, clinic, hospital, whatever is covered except for private clinics. This also covers non-cosmetic dental.
  • If you are not covered by your company (part-time, etc) you pay directly into the government system. How much you pay is scaled based on earnings.
  • Everything is centralized, no haggling over prices or service.
  • Care is very good. Wait times less than I remember back home.
  • Companies are required to send their employees in for a comprehensive physical every year. If they fail they get flagged by the government.
  • Down-side: Non-private is not cutting edge all the time. When I had a varicose vein removed from my leg, insurance only paid for stripping. I paid for laser elsewhere.

Id go down with my two buddies... fk that.

Same here.. My dog is my son.. He’s literally my best friend and I spend more time with him than literally anyone on earth.. I’d kill for him, I’d sell my house to save him if I had to, I’d turn into a zombie for him. I don’t care...

How people can just give up their pets pisses me off... I honestly think people like that don’t deserve to live, as harsh as that sounds..

More than just China under reporting the number of deaths.

“There are many more dead than are officially declared. But this is not a j’accuse. People died and they were never tested because time and resources are limited,” Eugenio Fossati, deputy mayor of Coccaglio, says of deaths caused by the virus."

With tests so hard to come buy it really doesn't make sense testing dead bodies.
"MILAN–—In the town of Coccaglio, an hour’s drive east of here, the local nursing home lost over a third of its residents in March. None of the 24 people who died there were tested for the new coronavirus. Nor were the 38 people who died in another nursing home in the nearby town of Lodi." Some claim the US is having the same phenomenon.

I could post stuff but it's pointless as many just underplay everything and think it's all exagerrated and fake news. I see both sides but this things is definitely getting much worse now. The UK is starting to see numbers double now. One thing I will state is I don't believe China's official figures at all. Other countries I 100% believe them but not China.

It only matters what was put on death certificate and reported. In a time when the media has a running death count, I would put money on it, an 80 y/o with trouble breathing and cough dies, its gonna be labeled covid. Why even waste a test? If anything I would bet its OVER reported. Maybe some just had influenza, they got pneumonia from other causes, they all getting covid label!!

There was hospital in NY that had refrigerated truck parked on the street and they are bringing out body bags on gurney`s right there on sidewalk! Of course people on the street get video and it goes viral. Come on, every hospital has a loading dock, why would the truck not be up there to load bodies privately, if indeed the morgue in basement was really full? For publicity to blow this thing up bigger. Was the biggest staged event I`ve ever seen.
Bodies are kept at the morgue for 4 days, at least that's what my uncle is doing at his hospital if they have any. I don't think he has had any yet, but not sure. The plan is to keep them at the hospital until the virus dies. They don't want to be transporting them around town because that could spread the virus to others, mostly those transporting the bodies I suppose and workers at the funeral home. Easier to just keep them there.

Yes, I agree. To some folks the earth really is flat. They will think that until it comes to their neighborhood. It really hasn't even started yet here in a lot of cities. New York is the only city getting hammered really bad. Other cities will take its place soon. Trying to keep politics out of it because the mods will just close it down like the other threads.

More than 1,000 in US die in a single day from coronavirus, doubling the worst daily death toll of the flu .

"The U.S. topped 1,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day for the first time Wednesday, a daily death toll more than double that of two of America's most deadly illnesses – lung cancer and the flu. The previous high mark for a single day in the U.S. was Tuesday, with 504 deaths."

"

While health officials say COVID-19 is considered a flash medical event in that it is unlikely to maintain its deadly hold for more than three or four months, the 1,000 threshold is a significant one because it shows just how potent an unforeseen outbreak can be on the U.S. medical system.

It also raises questions about COVID-19's possible deadly effects over time. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, has cautioned that the virus could become a recurring event, much like the flu. He said that the U.S. needs to get ready for the next cycle, possibly to occur in the fall of 2020. Nationally, the University of Washington model predicts a peak daily death toll of 2,214 in mid-April, and a total of 84,000 Americans dead by the end of summer. That’s more than twice the lives claimed during the 2018-19 flu season, which killed 34,000 people, according to the CDC. "

So about 84,000 dead by the end of summer and that's with all of the actions the President and Governors have taken. If those actions weren't taken then the estimate would be much higher. Hopefully the prediction is wrong. Today I went to Lab Corp for a blood test, first time ive been out other than walking our neighborhood in 2 1/2 weeks.

This model calls for a bit over 93,000 deaths by August 4 in the US alone. Each day it changes with new data. Yesterday it was down around 85,000 but with the big death today it must have driven it back up. Showing April 16th as the peak for the US as a whole. Each state can be shown too.

Keeping the bodies separate from the rest of the hospital.

Not surprising deaths are under reported, just the number who has the virus is also under reported, more have or than thought and more will die from it also. But more will recover, and hopefully that will increase also as treatment options open up and doctors gain experience with it. Some people are amazing in their ability to learn quickly and react under pressure.

We laid off 270 people last week. Whether you get sick or get laid off this virus is going to hit most of us in one of those ways.

6.65 million new unemployment claims in the US in the last week - crazy shit man

46 lost jobs per every confirmed case of C19. 263 confirmed cases in my county and my son in law who is a city manager for Greeley CO just let go 300 employees. The Goobermint better print way more than 2.2 trillio.
