Queer Beer is first booze marketed toward gays & lesbians;
Mexico-made brew in demand worldwide.

A Jalisco-based Mexican brewery is marketing a beer to appeal to the gay and lesbian market: Queer Beer.
Purple Hand and Salamandra beers were created by Minerva brewery to be marketed specifically toward the gay community, according to company spokeman Dario Rodriguez Wyler.
"We're out in the market with great respect with the idea of offering a product directed to the gay-lesbian community that has been ignored for too long but is important and very demanding," Wyler told the Mexican news agency Efe.
Purple Hand, and its companion brew Salamandra, are brewed with 100% organic honey and malt, with a recipe that "infuses the beer with a citrus flavor that appeals to the taste of the LGBT community," Wyler said.
The Purple Hand Beer and Salamandra beers are already available in some bars and restaurants in Guadalajara, Mexico City and the Mexican resorts of Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.
The beer was dubbed Purple Hand in honor of the 1969 gay rights protest in San Francisco, British daily the U.K. Telegraph reported.
Despite enormous interest, the brand is not yet available in the U.S. Minerva has reportedly received purchase requests from the U.S., Argentina, Ecuador, Japan and Chile.
The brew maker said that despite the popularity of Queer Beer, the company has taken a lot of heat for it from displeased consumers.
"We've received a lot of criticism about whether we were excluding heterosexuals," Rodríguez told the Seattle Gay News. "It's been a great challenge. They tell us we are very brave for developing in Mexico the first drink directed exclusive for such an interesting and badly tended-to community."
Don't like beer? The brewery also has a line of wines that are specially marketed toward the gay and lesbian community. If Queer Beer is a success, once it reaches the U.S., the wines could follow.
