OK to install XP Updates?

Hey guys-

got a question for you. I get daily notices about needing to install updates to my Windows XP operating system. Can you tell me if these are ok to download?

I mean, as in having no bugs and zero reliability issues? I know new releases often have worse problems than the old ones did

1- Microsoft Windows installer 3.1

3- Update for Windows XP (KB898461)

The Package Installer facilitates the install of software updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems and other Microsoft products. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

For the most part, they are very dependable. Alot of them are patching legacy code that would normally allow for buffer overrun which means you can be infected by malware if you do not patch them. Also, instead of Windows Update use Microsoft Update instead which will update all of the Microsoft software on your computer including Office instead of just Windows.
