Old folks and insulin use... would you?

1st off I miss alot of you guys. I see @Massive G is still here... hey brother! Miss the GF days..

My question now that Ive teared uo a lkttle is insulin use after 50. Its been probably 15yrs since I messed with it and gained well on it but things get different as we age.

Obviously know the rules of slin to follow but would using 5iu pre workout 4 days per week be of any benefit if Im just truying to add back another 10 pounds of muscle?

Already use 5iu good GH and berberine for glucose support. Im on trt+ but only enough to keep my test levels around 1500. This is where my other labs seem happy.

I probably dont NEED to use slin but I used to love it and I know it works. Just looki g for advice from the guys I respect.
 
Good to see you. Over 50 myself and I have pondered this as well. I've grown very well without it but haven't used it in a long time. Currently in a cut but when the time comes to clean bulk the more info the better. I like options so I'm interested in the responses you get.
 
I’d like to think I know a decent amount about insulin, that being said I haven’t used it in years but will be adding it into my training very shortly. I’ll use it differently than when I was younger but will start with 5iu’s pre & follow with 5iu’s post workout. I definitely think you should be able to add 10lbs. Might have to play around with your dosage but 5-10iu’s should be more than enough to do that 😉😎👊🏻💪🏻
 
I dont know what your age is other than over 50 based on your post and I dont know what your current stats are but adding 10 pounds of muscle is no small feat for someone over 40 depending on where they are starting. Over 50 is even more of an ask.

Do you feel adding 10 pounds of muscle to your existing frame is attainable? If you're running TRT, how much test are you thinking of running to add 10 more pounds of muscle?
 
Hard to say anyone will gain 10 pounds of muscle over 50. Don't know your history and there is a few factors involve here. I know if I take TRT at 65, I see a difference. Add GH, even more, add insulin even more.

I am now 51.. currently around 210 with a decent physique. I have abs and a 33 inch waist at 5'9.. I hate this term but I "used to be" a 255 pound off season with a competition weight of 220-225(heavy weight) Last time I weighed that was 2014 though. I stuck around 230 for years and started letting my weight come down due to time and not really caring... always have trained and never stopped through the incredible shrinking period. Ive got time in the sport and know alot of the gurus from competing and coaching.

As for raising my test up I was going to go to 750mg for a blast... assuming that my BP doesnt spink too bad(ive not had to be on any meds ofr it and wont risk that). I would keep my 5iu gh going as well. It gives me a sense of well being and my A1cs have been good with my berberine support.
 
Not a fan of insulin, never gave me anything.
 
I’m 35 and use it for every workout

I’ll never stop using it.. the anabolic/anti-catabolic power vs the minuscule cost and side effect profile makes it a no brainer to me

This a million times. Plus, it helps me keep my insulin sensitivity extremely high even on near 5000 calories (HOMA-IR was 0.7 at the end of my last progress phase, on 800+ carbs/day).

I know Skip is a fan but I wont ask him for free protocols out of respect as a friend

At 50 its all about our labs... if it affects the labs I bail... not worth the risk
 
My take on slin is it's now been proven to be one of the safest compounds we use, as long as it's used sensibly and monitored. Only thing I'll add to this is shorter acting slin like Humalog, seems to be preferred when insulin resistance comes into play. The body needs a break, and at middle age we're not eating like a pro requiring copious amounts of food around the clock. Unless you're a diabetic and your doc prescribed you Lantus. I once had a conversation with a guy that won nationals (years ago) as a junior. He told me he put on 60lbs of weight over 6 months using 4iu of slin/day. In other words, middle aged guys like us most likely can do just fine with 2iu, 4iu, 6iu per day. What's the reason to push the limits when we can efficiently push a few extra calories in when we need them here and there.

37. I strictly use Humalog, pre (16iu) and post (10iu) and a small amount (4-5iu) with other meals that are very heavy on carbs, just to control BG and give some relief/aid to my pancreas some while also not completely removing it from the equation.

Humalog works well... but so does IM humilin R. When used in past I preferred R.

When I used slin 1st time I got 20pounds in 4 weeks... but was bloated and puffy. Not what we want especially at 50. I was more curious what or if anyone in this age group is using the 5 to10iu successfully for adding muscle

There is and is all info I already know... I was friends with Meadows and know a certain Mr. Olympia as well. This thread is very good and the giu knows his stuff.

At 50 Im not sure these protocols should be used. IM NOT TRYING TO BREAK 250 POUNDS AND COMPETE AGAIN. Im just trying to see if there is anyone in thus age group(besides skip) who is using slin and how.

IF i do this maybe Ill log for the over 50 crowd. More inclined to use a mild Meadows approach or at least just the 1st half of weeks 1 to 6 as above

56 in a couple weeks and have started using it again. 3/7iu worked up to 5/10iu pre and post humalog.
I use it to coax some hepatic IGF-1 when using GH and to help process the carbs I am eating - I never take insulin to just ram down more carbs, quite the reverse.

It's not going to add slabs of muscle, but I don't think that's a wise goal for us "older gents" anyway.

The biggest issue with reta is the volume off for food noise. People forget to eat because they are so full or just not hungry. If you can eat your food and keep to your calories it works wonders on your bloods, even at 1.75mg per week. I have had clients(women) with an 1800 defecit that struggle to get 1500 with that low dose of reta. Then they wonder why they lost all of their muscle with a 30pound weight loss.
