One of the Funniest Things About Our Sport

I think it was uncalled for and rude for Bilbo to insult Dusty's nice message but, it still is an interesting subject. Why are people so offended by the idea that bodybuildings may not be a sport and bodybuilders may not be athletes?
Sport- competitive athletic activity
Athlete- person trained or gifted in sports or physical exercises
Bodybuilding- the art or practice of exercising, lifting weights, ect, so as to develop the muscles of the body
I would say that bodybuilders are athletes but, bodybuilding is not a sport. This is not to say it is not difficult and worthy of respect. Are soldiers, tree climbers, package handlers at UPS, athletes or their activities considered sports? Even pro-wrestling has admitted it is not a sport and its performers have called themselves "workers" long before it was admitted it was a performance to avoid steroid testing. The simple fact is that bodybuilders are judged purely on looks, just like a beauty contestant, it doesn"t matter how they got that way. If they were judged or scored for their performance on an exercise then i would agree, sport. That was a great post by Emeric about art and sport, I enjoyed reading it.

im not gonna say that bodybuilders arent athletes or that its not a sport, but on the continuum of athletic endeavors, bodybuilding definitely lies far towards the less athletic side of things... i mean honestly it is an accomplishment to walk at 250lbs + ripped but its all at the expense of flexibility, agility, speed, and power... also in general bodybuilders use lifts which require very little athelticism (with the exception of squat/deadlift variations which are moderately athletic lifts)..but there are certainly more athletic lifts out there which are never used in bodybuilding...id love to take some of the stronger cats in here and on the national/pro level and watch them snatch or clean, run through agilities, jump progressions, plyometrics, flexibility drills - it would be a humbling experience for sure and it would certainly bring their current state of athleticism into question, i guarantee most are not even close to bein as athletic as they think they are and most of the top guys are probably so inflexible that they would not even be able to perform olympic lifts which are easily the most athletic form of weightlifting...im not saying bodybuilders couldnt be athletic if they dropped weight and worked on sport related skills, because many bodybuilders get their start in the gym thru sports, but at 4 lbs/inch you are just not that athletic anymore...

...dont really understand what you're trying to say here. This is bodybuilding dude. No one cares about how 'athletic' you are. That might explain why you're small. Now, you might choose to only be that size, you don't want to get any bigger, but you did in fact start bodybuilding to gain size, did you not? That's like being in nascar and only driving 120 mph when everyone else is going 200. It's stupid and ignorant to knock bigger bodybuilders because you don't choose to take that path. oh and btw, most of the type guys, cutler, phil, kai, freeman, do plenty of stretching and are pretty flexible for how big they are so your argument is worthless anyways.

Some think BB is a sport, some don't...so what...if you enjoy it, do it. No matter what you think, when you see someone with a great physique...heads turn.
