OT... hearing aids

Good deal Buddy. Glad you don't have a sufficient amount of hearing loss to the point of being in need of hearing aids.

I was basically told the same thing about ear protection, anything loudish can and will cause hearing loss if exposed to for extended or repeated times. Kind of an eye opener, isnt it?

Glad you went and checked it out. Now you know where you sit with the sitiation and what you can do to better and or prevent problems in the future.

Next Thursday I go and pick up my hearing aids. I'm looking forward to them actually. Will update this thread with how it goes and how much it helps, in case anyone is interested.

He recommended I come back in 3 years to get tested again. The damage does add up, year after year. He pointed out how the graph they use had negative numbers on the vertical axis up above 0. Zero is the median hearing of the population. The numbers that are higher up and negative are people with hearing that is better than the median. He explained that those are pretty much young kids that haven't damaged their hearing yet lol!

I started damaging mine when I was in high school in the 80s. I bought a kickass Alpine car stereo and cranked up Ozzy and Judas Priest about as loud as it would go with the windows up. My ears would ring for hours after that. Young guys can be stupid huh. My ringing recently has gotten worse, I guess it is all the concerts I have been going to.

Hearing doc called earlier. Hearing aids came in a few days early. Heading there shortly to pick them up. Will report back.

Believe it or not, I think a majority of the damage I got must be from concerts. I have these on the way:

Im going to at least 2 more concerts next year, already planned. Ozzy/Megadeth and a Metallica concert. I will try out these earplugs and report back. Anyone like us with hearing loss should definitely wear earplugs to concerts. I used to think it was wimpy, but now I just see it as foolish not to. I wish I had. This ringing in my ears sucks. After the last concert it never totally went away like it usually does. Usually the ringing is loud and gradually goes away by the end of day 2 after a concert. The last one I saw was Slayer, and it was LOUD! Too loud.

My new ears are now installed. Wow!

Unbelevable what I wasn't able to hear that I didn't know about. Stuff like the turn signal in my truck, walking in gravel, clicking a writing pen, typing on a keyboard, running water. I keep finding noises that I can hear now that I haven't heard in a long time. Just now lit a fire in the fire place... the crackling sound the wood makes while its burning, I haven't heard that in a long time. Never thought I would be happy about having fricking hearing aids. I'm pretty stoked right now bros

Wow, you really did have significant hearing loss. Congrats on getting them. You are already having a great time. I will need some eventually I am sure. Technology keeps getting better and better.

Did they tune them to accentuate the frequencies you have hearing loss at or is it more like one size fits all? My doctor said that just about all people's hearing loss occurs at the same frequency range. For some reason the number 4000 is in my mind from my test. So mine centers around 4000 HZ.

Just found this online, someone poised a question and then there is an answer:
"My mum wears hearing aids but still struggles hearing the high notes when listening to music. Can you recommend a sound system to overcome this?

Music can be a struggle for many with hearing aids. While we cannot provide specific medical advice, some devices can be programmed to have a special setting just for music. This program ususally can enhance the sounds of music more accurately. We suggest you follow up with your hearing care professional to see what features your mother's devices have and how you can best take advantage of them. All the best to you!"

Thanks Mal. Definitely not a one size fits all. Each individual hearing aid is built and programmed per patient according the the specialists findings on the hearing test. I specifically had the biggest problem hearing very soft sounds, although I did have hearing probloms far beyond that. So yes, they do tune them to specific needs.

They do have a hearing aid that is built for music enhancement, I believe I mentioned it earlier in this thread. It was a heari g aid that was one step above the one I got. I believe it was approx $1200 more for that option. But yes, they do make hearing aids that are built for music specifically. The doc told me that they are a very popular option for musicians, and of course folks like you that love music and are enthusiasts about concerts etc.

I think he said how much they were somewhere in this thread if you search it. I called my health insurance to see how much they will pay for hearing aids and it was $1500 per ear, so a total of $3k. If you have health insurance it will probably pay most of the cost.

Hi bugs. The hearing aids cost me $5450. I am self employed and do not have insurance so unfortunately it was all on me. hopefully you bros have good insurance that will help out. But I will tell you, it was worth every penny Of that out of pocket cost. Life is better with ears that work.

I figured I would stop by and give an update now that it has been a few months with the hearing aids. Being able to hear properly is literally life changing. I'm no longer hesitant to answer my cell phone, its great being able to conversate at work on a loud jobsite without asking what people said ten times before I figure it out. And most importantly I can sit at the dinner table with my wife and daughter and hear them tell me about the day they had.

My quality of life has definitely improved. My suggestion to anyone out there that is noticing hearing loss, don't hesitate and put it off like I did for a long time. Get to a hearing specialist and let them sort out your hearing problems. As I said, its truly life changing being able to have one of my most important senses back.

All sounds are totally natural sounding. There is a devise that comes with the hearing aids that allows you to take them out as you need to. Inserting them requires some practice and probably shouldn't be done on your own until after some time but you can do it. I really think you need to go try them out and see for yourself. I promise they are a game changer!
