OT- Pill Cutters

Hey guys does anyone have any recommendations for pill cutters on Amazon? Preferably something that can cut into 4ths

I just use ones from my local grocery. Works fine. I’ve honestly never used one that didn’t get the job done no issue.

I've used ones from grocery as well. Single pill splitter and basically a blade that comes down on a pill that's held in a "V" shape. The only issue with that kind is that if you have a rounded shape pill that isn't flat on the bottom and the pill is hard, you get screwed cuts sometimes. I have some quasi-name brand aromasin like this and lots of fails. I did just see this version that holds sides. I might try it as I stocked up on those on sale and they are hard to use so have a lot - and would need a big test dose to warrant using the pills whole. I have lots of other aromasin so not really an issue.

This is more or less the exact situation I’m in. I have 25mg tabs of Aromasin that I’m trying to get into 4ths but I’ve tried a few different methods (razor blade, knife, Walmart generic pull cutter) that brutally destroy the pill. Will be giving this one a try, fingers crossed

A pill cutter is actually one of the few things that a disparity of quality and ease of use an be felt quickly and easily. A cheap one will do of course. But a top notch pill cutter is worth the small extra cost. A quality pressed pill can be precisely diced up with a quality tool. And a quality tool can save a soft tablet poorly formulated in some cases.

I mean, I’m kinda frugal. I try and save where I can. But the $6 to $18 dollar difference in a rubbish cutter vs a quality pill slicer is worth every extra cent. You can’t take it with ya fellas. Don’t be afraid to spend a lil extra on yourself from time to time. Plus, tools and medicine are no places to cut corners.

Just bought it. Seems same as the other I posted (had never seen these before) but a tad cheaper. I had looked for better models and never found one like this or much in the way of variants. Appreciate the endorsement on it too.

Nice bro! Cool thing with this one is the arms hold the pills and you cause use your thumb to keep pressure on them for an even better cut.

cutting pills into quarters is tough depending on the binder some crumble and you lose consistent dosing. You can crush the pills and cut them into 4 equal "lines" and take them mixed in a liquid. Can even weight the powder if you want to be super precise.

I honestly hadn't even thought of crushing the pills and doing that way. lol not a bad idea.

When dosages get so low that they can’t be split accurately what I do is dissolve the pill in a glass of water and drink the proportion of it that you need.

One thing to realize is that even US FDA guidelines around accurate pharmaceutical dosing of pills is a +/- 10% variance for general pills. So 100mg whole pills will be anywhere between 110 and 90mg. I don't know a lot about pill manufacture (probably a batch with geometric dilution with binder and weighing then press) but I'm going to assume there's also potential for uneven distribution of active ingredient within each pill itself so 1/4 pill may vary significantly from another 1/4 pill of the same pill and likely more between 1/4s of different pills of the same drug.

Said more succinctly, you start breaking up one of these pills into small sections and there's a strong potential for false precision on any single dose. Longer half-life drug should smooth it out some but a lot of these meds are shorter. We get down to "good enough" pretty quickly.

@alfresco's way about with a single pill in solution/suspension is a good one because you are within the 10% variance in the whole glass of water. That said, suspensions in water aren't exactly homogenous either so this still isn't perfect (solution as opposed to suspension is a lot better though but a lot of stuff isn't water soluble).

Another alternative would be to use a actual suspension vehicle like oraplus or humco. You would grind up multiple pills in a mortar and pestle then create an actual suspension using oraplus/humco.

Got my new one. Rounded aromasin seems to work great so that's solved. I have some hctz tabs I split and I get some crumbles here. It appears to be a lower quality tab but I have better success and less waste with a old one. I'd say 1 in 4 pills end up fragmented beyond halves. It solves most all other issues so very happy with it and $9 is minimal investment (pharma aromasin is way more)

I've got one of these, works pretty good for splitting into quarters. Sometimes those really small pills just crumble no matter what though.
