I'll preface it by saying that I'm not a religious person (like at all), nor do i want this to be a religious discussion thread, but this hurricane--I'm praying that it weakens and turns south

The storm continues to rapidly intensify, and if it stays on the current trajectory that it's on, myself along with hundreds of thousands of other people will lose close to everything. With a 10-15 storm surge (assuming it weakens before landfall), my house will be completely underwater, assuming there's even a house to come back to

It really puts things into perspective. We often take things for granted. One day my biggest concern is my diet and trying to maximize my gains in the gym, and within a few days, none of that matters. I just want a house to come back to.

Please keep the people of Florida in your thoughts and prayers. This is going to be a bad one, a potentially record setting storm, and a lot of people are going to suffer

Most definitely in my prayers 🙏

My folks are in Sarasota and will take a beating… You’d think they’d listen to their son who’s been through dozens of hurricanes. Nope, they think they’re just fine staying put.

They’re elderly obviously…. So surviving is one thing, but living in the chaos afterwards for months sucks ass!

With my job I’m in the thick of things after a storm passes. So I’m in the disaster zone immediately working to get gas back flowing again. So I’m well aware of what it’s like and it definitely blows. Heaven forbid they lose a lil money!!!! But that’s the oil/gas industry for ya…

The gnarliest was Katrina.. Working around soooooo many dead livestock and pets. The smell is soooooo bad!!!! Sooooooo BAD!!!

Wished em the best of luck. Some people are just f’n stubborn and gotta learn the extremely brutal way.

Happy to hear you will be safe man as that’s what matters most.

My mother lives in Brevard, NC and I wouldn’t wish what they went through with the last hurricane on anyone. The chaos there is something you think you’ll never see.

Yeah the newer models show it shifting towards Sarasota a bit. Wish them safety and nothing but the best man. God speed

Yeah we're still reeling from the last hurricane as well. Luckily we have 12 feet of elevation so there wasn't flooding, but a lot of my neighbors weren't so lucky. They had to throw everything out. Now this monster is rolling in less than a week later. It's just one gut punch after the next.

I'm lucky enough that I have the funds for repairs (granted it'll be in the hundreds of thousands so it's going to hurt like a mother fucker), but there's a lot of people who were going to retire, are retired, or who are on the brink of retiring-- that are now having to go back to work and retirement is out of the question. Those are the people I feel for the most. They busted their ass their whole lives to retire and live modestly, just to have it ripped away by something completely out of their control

It's rough..

Ya man sold our house on siesta key earlier this year so glad we did it’s literally on the beach I don’t see how it doesn’t get fucked. My in laws live in nearby lakewood ranch and are hunkering down rather than leaving. I hope it ends up easing up before landfall. Nervous for them and everyone else down there. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Really feeling for everyone on this...I grew up in Sarasota, lived in Tampa, and have lots of family and friends in the area...some left the state and some hunkering down...really scary and eye opening experience. Helene really caused some serious devastation and looks like it was just an appetizer of what's to come.

I'm in Miami, we're expecting Cat1 winds and some local flooding, nothing too serious, unless you're in the market for a used car after this is over. With the way it's looking, Tampa is about to take a beating, and everyone there is evacuating right now (our buildings can withstand a Cat3 easy, but it starts getting sketchy when you're at ground zero of a Cat4, and a Cat5 will blow your roof off, guaranteed). I'm watching the news, if the hurricane changes course and starts pointing toward me, I'm getting in my car and driving up to Daytona.

I have been in the oil and gas for 20 years. Lived in louisana as well for 35 years and then moved to Utah to work at a refinery here for 7 years. I stupidly moved back and didn't make it 2 years. Now I'm back in urah. As with you, my parents are elderly and won't move, so I just have to hope they survive and offer for them to come stay with me when storms come. They got ravaged a few years ago in lake charles and were basically homeless and living with relatives for a year or so

I grew up in South Florida and lived through Hurricane Andrew which almost bankrupted my grandfather’s insurance company. Bunch of my close friends lost their houses during Katrina in Nola. These fuckers are no joke. I have a lot of friends and business associates in the Tampa area. If you’re not evacuating I hope you got hurricane impact windows and a generator 🙏🏻.

Impact doors and windows are part of the building code now, which is why I said you're safe up to a Cat3, but there's no guarantee with those on anything higher (typically you have to be exactly at ground zero to get Cat4/5 winds).

Still, it's better than being stuck in a trailer... Homestead got destroyed during Andrew and it's part of the reason why everything is so built up now.

As for genny's, you can, but the quick workaround to that problem is to purchase property that's on a hospital's grid since that gets priority for power restoration.

I used liquid silicone on all the doors, then put duct tape over it, then put a tarp over it, and then sandbags ontop of it. Windows are all boarded up. Its really the best I can do at the moment.

I'm in Orlando at the moment staying with my sister. The wind damage will still be bad but atleast there won't be a storm surge. Just praying for the best right now, but I agree it's no joke--- category 1 and 2 is fun, category 3 can be iffy, category 4 is where shit gets serious, and category 5-- everything is just fucked

Florida is going to be uninsurable after this. The rates are already ridiculous but now all these companies are going to go bankrupt without government intervention.

Yep. Little did I know until I left la, Florida then la are the top 2 highest home insurance in the nation. This will only make it worse. A lot of the insurers in lake charles la stopped insuring mobile homes or anything south of i10 a few years back

A lot of insurers already left the region and rates are pretty insane. This will definitely make things worse, but they're predicting the storm will weaken as it starts traveling north. Nothing is certain with this one, though.

Im just outside Orlando. I might head further inland a bit if the storm comes rolling through at a CAT 3.

If you can physically help with relief, rescue, or recovery, those are best. If you can help with donations, that helps too. Remember, well-wishing doesnt help people in a crisis.

I dont think the for-profit model of insurance in a place like Florida is sustainable long term. Im not sure there are any viable alternatives unfortunately. Bought a house and we got dropped by insurance the first year. Finding a replacement was a slog. I love it here but it's not without its problems.

If you’re in hurricane prone areas definitely procure flood insurance! The feds have really f’d the flood insurance program up with the Risk 2.0 shit and made it crazy expensive.

However, you’ll wish you had it when one of these monsters brews up! I’m literally 1’ above sea level so I NEED it!!!!!!
