So I am only 42 but had a serious falling out with healthcare that has left me with absolutely zero interest in working it again. I am disgusted by it all. I was a Marine then firefighter and between my pensions I don't need to work. But after multiple fast paced jobs plus grad school twice over 20yrs I am struggling to not have a goal or purpose to chase. I dont have a desire to work some lame $15/hr job "for fun". Or at least I havent found anything I would find fun to do twice a week or so. I read, write, run errands, clean, cook, laundry... essentially Mr Homemaker. But I have a lot of down time too that I feel is a waste and I nap or vape and feel I could have done something productive I just dont know what lol. Don't get me wrong it is peaceful and I am blessed to be in the situation I just would love a passion project or something to captivate me besides the gym and training. I briefly considered going back to school.

Those that are retired... What do your days look like? Do you work part time? What do you do to keep busy besides normal chores/duties and the gym? Ever feel guilty not being more active?

I live and work on a farm. If you want something that will take up any and all free time you have and not make you rich and require relentless hard work I can only recommend as a perfect option 😅

On a positive note though being able to be fairly self sufficient and off grid to a degree (can go to the extremes if you wish) is super satisfying and rewarding

Dog park,Gym,pick up boys from school and dog walk. That`s my usual day sometimes I take my mom to her medical appointments.I have to keep busy if not I would go mad.I am 52 btw.

I mean I’d base it off something you have
-skill in
-interest or passion in

If you can combine both, that’s the magic recipe

You said you were a marine and firefighter—maybe you could do something along the lines of private security, or as a bodyguard?

Maybe with a medical background and an obvious interest in bodybuilding you could open one of those IV clinics that are becoming mainstream now for athletes that need to hydrate, or people with disposable income that need to hydrate after a night of partying or whatever? Or a trt/hrt/peptide clinic joint venture?

I wouldn’t really define cleaning, cooking, laundry and errands as hobbies—moreso just part of life, but you said you like to write. Could maybe take a stab at starting a blog in a topic of interest? Or a book?

Good Thread. I'll be in this situation in 3 years. Not sure what I'm going to do but it's no going to be work. I thought about volunteering at a dog rescue or something along those lines.

I'm 61 but getting tired of the rat race so may retire early next year to enjoy life and to look after an elderly relative

Just start investing. Very satisfying.

Tech/chip/data center/semiconductor/networking stocks have been on absolute fire lately. Basically anything with AI application.

Not sure if it’s sustainable on this path, but it’s definitely been fun to watch

I’ve often thought about an animal shelter. My problem is I’d take them all home with me

I drive cats around Florida for a rescue group. A lot of the people that capture and treat the cats don’t have cars.

I take them to their vet appointments or drop them off with other rescues where they get treatments or wait until adoption.

Feels great to help the helpless.

Have you thought about volunteering your time to community service, to help those that are not as fortunate as you?

I'm 55, retired last year due to a restructuring and took the package. Because I live in Japan I was able to retire with my cash and investments.
My days are spent with my wife who is also retired from the same company, training, eating, looking after clients, practicing my Japanese, and watching old monster, horror, and sci-fi movies.

Oh, and buying sneakers. Lots of sneakers.

I think the simple baseline fact that I live (well) in a foreign country provides mental stimulation and a sense of accomplishment, even without active work.

I only got 20 more years to go, im sure it will fly by ! 😅

We retired early as well, me before 50 and the wife before 40. I wondered if we might get bored but we haven’t. We also relocated to the Riviera Maya, just Sourh of Cancun so there’s lots to do. Typical days we wake up and head to the gym. After that we head back home and eat and relax for a little bit. A lot of days we’ll hang in the pool for a bit then either make dinner or go out to eat. Evenings are couch/TV/PS5 time. Mix in normal living things like grocery store runs, haircuts, massages, etc and our days are usually pretty full. We’re also lucky enough to be able to spend all day, every day on the beach if we wanted. Oh and the wife is now thinking about volunteering at an animal shelter also, seems to be a theme with retired people.

I retired six years ago at age 29. At first I traveled a bunch but that got old (I like my boring routine at home). My days consist of hanging with my wife and dog, few hours of relaxed walking cardio with them, few hours of the gym or going to the track, and otherwise mostly just lounging. I have some sports cars and sports bikes that I entertain myself with sometimes but truly I love just sleeping 10 hours a day and relaxing. Every now and again I contemplate getting a job and feel like a bum but eh I’m not there yet … doing nothing is quite enjoyable.

Man can I relate to you in working in the medical field. I ment to comment on your post explaining your past work and how it all went. Can totally relate as I had some great position and nice titles, but was a living hell for the most part going to work everyday as at least 50% of the women in the offices or clinical were usually fat ugly women/cunts.
Anyways, you have quite a bit of experience in two very successful fields. Always the possibility of it being time you start your own business. Think your mentioned you were a RN, so could always go back to school and become a NP.

Start day drinking.. I tried it for two weeks when i retired at 49.. I have the same routine as you. try to enjoy it if you can

I retired 6 years ago. I am having the best time of my life. I travel all over Europe with show cats for competitions. Just came back from Latvia, a 25 hour drive. They have The World Championship here in Bucharest end of October.

I am also part of a 1% motorcycle club who has regular events to go too. Sometimes we have meetings and barbecue. I will be in Italy at world run next summer.

I also go to gym. Use to go 4 days, but schedules have me doing 3 days a lot.

The thing that will make people grow older faster is inactivity. My suggestion is keep busy and do things you wanted to do. Keep exercise in your routine too.

Well I dont feel as lazy as I first did hearing others routines. I know I am fortunate and like I said it is very drastic pace of life and very new so I am sure I will figure it out. I think perhaps some volunteering is a good idea especially humane society/animal shelter. Maybe some local travel as in parks, hiking spots, etc. I do love fall.

Even an IV clinic turns me off. I have a masters degree and really enjoyed teaching undergrad. When things started to get bad I felt like a cog in the machine churning out new grads to throw to the wolves. If anything I would sit at the front desk of the gym just to shoot the shit with people. Or a high end car dealer as a concierge.

And yeah I wasnt trying to say cleaning and cooking were hobbies haha (though I do enjoy cooking) just that I was trying to be productive as a new homemaker haha.

Sidenote-always surprising to see the number of 50+ guys here that lift serious which is really cool.
