OT: work/life vent

Hope it all works in your favor. My fiancé is a RN of 10 yrs and I never understood stood the stress and shit treatment you guys get - and with no mental help from what I see.
In my opinion, you guys play a major role in everyday society.

If you have a pre-existing condition that you have a diagnosis for, you are protected under ADA. Your HR dept should know that. If not, your attorney can take care of that for you. It's virtually impossible for them to fire you if you do have a diagnosis.

I recently made 20 years. Most of that on a neuro floor. About a year in the ED. Made the same mistake with the controlled medication. In my case it was Phenobarbital. HR/manager came down unnecessarily hard for something I perceived as a simple mistake. I don't have the military history you do but we both know the cumulative stress working at the bedside has on your psyche. The long 12 hour shifts. Combative patients. Unrealistic family expectations. High RN to pt ratios. The inability to get in touch with a pt's primary so you gotta chase the phone tree and of course no-one want's to make difficult decisions if it's not their pt. The easy way to cope is through alcohol/drugs but that's a temporary fix. You need a change. Seems working at the VA would be the perfect place for you. If any employer is gonna understand your particular situation it's gonna be the VA. Whatever you do, find something with less stress. Fuck the money!

hey brother i have a very similar experiences. PM me if you need to vent. I've been in these situations a few times , like when I got kicked out of a program for having half tabs of VA prescribed BP meds that were assumed to be narcotics

Thank you. I wanted to vent to people that I figured would understand hardship and maybe some stereotyping and unfair behavior. Then I worried it was too much and I was being overly dramatic. But this situation really fucked with my head. I dont know why and wish it wouldn't have. I feel ashamed and embarassed. But thank you @3BILLS and everyone else for the support. I will get through it and move on taking a lot of the advice guys have said. It is really nice to have some empathy and feel like people care.
