1) Which would be better for over all shoulder width. Side Laterals or Clean and Presses

2) Can anyone tell me why all forms of bench pressing (even fairly light weigh) less then the military presses I do bother my left rotator cuff but yet military presses don't bother me at all.

im my humble opinion
1. Standing military presses for overall shoulder width, thickness, and mass

2.Probably a leverage issue. Both pressing movements but at different angle's and leverage's
just my two cents.

First off, I'm 57 so I'm only too familiar with age and injury. I've had major surgery on both shoulders, so I've had to do lot of experimentation to come up with a menu of excercises I can do effectively.
1) I can't imagine not doing both raises and some form of overhead pressing for shoulders, but if I had to pick, I'd do presses. I switch them up; some times I warm up with different styles to see which one feels best for my shoulders that day.. Standing or seated military (usually seated) with a free bar, Smith machine, or DB's. I can't do behind the head presses anymore. Unfortunately, that's the best my delts ever were when I could do them with a good bit of weight.
2) It took a while, but I finally found a grip width and path of motion that allows me to bench press without aggravating my shoulders, but I have to be very strict. I can bench more than I can military, but I do my most effective bench work with DB's.

can i just say one thing
about WHERE shoulder width ALL starts

REAR DELTS!!!!!
separates the men from the boys

Hey lenny what do you do for your rear delts? Do you work them individually or just from other back movements?

I can tell from your avatar that your rear delts are pretty friggin huge

Thanks man

For overall mass and thickness then presses, for the finishing touches and that wide look laterals and as tenny so correctly pointed out......rear delt work. So many guys have a very unbalanced look because of the lack of attention to rear delts.

Bench presses useually use much more weight and produce much more pressure through the shoulder joint than an overhead press. The bench press tends to push the shoulders out of the sockets when going in the lowering phase. They also push the humerus into a point of impinging on the tendons by pushing them upwards into the collar bones causing the AC joint to close up under pressure causing the tendons of the rotator to get squeezed. This also compresses the bursor sac which leads to inflamation and bursitis! As you press overhead the shoulder capsule is in a more stable position and is pulled back into the socket by the delts. Both can be a problem if done incorrectly.

rear delts get individual attention

anywhere from bentover laterials

to reverse pec deck
i sit at a 90 degree angle to the pad
and do single arm....gets pretty intense

also agree with rear delt work

but have seen much improvement in my delt width since hitting Wide Grip Barbell Rows hard

When do you work them in? Before/after back? Beginning/end delts?

What kind of training program do you do, high volume right?

for now yes

i'll do bentover laterials 4 sets of 10 to 15 pretty heavy 40or50 bells
then rev. pec deck 4 sets of 25....burn the fuck out of em

YouTube - The Secret To Bigger Shoulders - Shoulder Workout

it looks cool....for a baseball player or olympic swimmer
