So I was squatting the other day and had a sharp pain run across my knee cap. I was in severe pain and was wondering WTF. Went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Patella Femoral syndrome. Basically it is when the muscles in the legs are so tight that they pull the knee cap against the femur causing a grinding of the bone. Only treatment is stretching or surgery.

Warm your legs up on the bike then strech your quads and hams. YOu have to do it daily for it to really help.

I was diagnosed with the same thing last year. The weird thing is it comes and goes. It will flare up and give me pain during squats and leg presses for months anytime I progressively increase the weight each set. Sometimes I'm limited to squatting with 185-225 depending on the severity of pain. Then at times it will be gone or very diminished and I can use more weight without having it limit my poundage. I've found that using knee sleeves helps to some degree by keeping my knees warm and secure.

Did the doctor recommend any particular types of stretching exercises?

No really special stretches. Just the basic quad and hamstring stretches along with ice. I feel better as the days go by but i fuckin sucks knowing it will happen again. I guess I will have to stay on top of the stretching. I was wearing knee wraps when squatting. Thanks red Ill try it out.

Also you might want to get stuck into your patella tendon with a spoon or something similar with a blunt edge.

Doesn't have good blood flow as its a tendon, so getting stuck in there to help its tissue quality and blood flow.

Getting stuck into your ITB and TFL tissue quality might also improve things.
