Paxil and dieting

Hopefully some one can help me with this. My doctor prescribed to me Paxil due to some recent events. I was going to do a bodybuilding competition show locally... Now I read that Paxil causes weight gain, what do you guys think? Should I wait till after the show, or does anyone have any experience with this?

Stay off that crap! My girlfriend is a basket case and she is taking that crap. They have tryed to ween her off by lowering the dose, and she gets sick like flu symtoms. She has run out of pills, or has forgotten to take them, and she gets psychotic. Oh yeah she is also over weight, about 200 pounds. Now i am no doctor, but i think man has been dealing with the stresses of life for thousands of years with out drugs like these. I don't agree with anti depressants, ritilan or any of that. I don't know your specific situation....but there may be other ways of coping. Hope things get better for you.

Yeah I think I might avoid it. Im not suicidal by any means, just having some coping issues... But from everything I hear, and read, it seems that it possibly makes you worse coming off.

effexor has the withdrawls even worse than paxil. i've known plenty of cases where the doc has to leave them on, even when it is obvious the drug is not helping. personally i think it is a scam.

i dunno what your situation is, but you could ask your doc about welbutrin. it has anti-depressant properties, act immediatly, is much easier to come off, and also will help with dieting.

And the morons in congress say steroids are dangerous. yet paxil does all this. Some things never cease to amaze me.

Stay Away

I gained 20lbs in less than 2 months, and I still can't get it off.
There are plenty of other meds that do not have weight gain side affects.

I am not circumventing your dr's advice but there are better choices than Paxil. Wellbutrin is one, and I mention it because it is one anti-d that does not cause weight gain. I was put on Paxil and the sides were horrendous.
I am amazed at the number of dr's who will hand out anti-d scripts like candy and we are fooking with brain chemistry here. They do have some use in some people but along with type 2 diabetes drugs and anti-cholesterol they are the most mis prescribed drugs out there.
If you ever want to read up on them search some on "anti-depressants and lawsuits."
Again not advising you not to take an anti-d but maybe revisit it with the doc for better options and relay your concerns of weight gain etc.

i remember reading way back the USOC was trying get Prozac banned as they felt it was an ergogenic aid as "non depressed" athletes performed better than depressed ones.

I was on it for about 3 years. I came off cold turkey after all the other alternatives made me feel like crap. I can honestly say that coming off was the worst experience of my life, it took months to get rid of the headaches dizziness, nausea and worst of all shocking sensation in my head. I also have mild amnesia from the time I was on it, I cannot remember events such as my son's first steps and I was definitely there!

Get of it and seek psychiatric therapy asap is my advice. otherwise weight gain could be the least of your worries

I know it kills a woman's libido and makes it very hard for them to achive orgasm. I suspect its much the same in men. As far as sides, people I know have been able to stay on prozac and live with the sides, the other meds like welbutrin were unbearable.

I don't post much, but I will give my opinion on this....Don't take Paxil! I tried it for bout a week back when life wasn't so great. The sides are awful. It does kill your sex drive and I felt very bla. Didn't care about anything. It has got to be one of the worst anti-depressants. It's an old drug and as others have said, there are better alternatives out there.

Delayed orgasm was one of the sides I suffered, at times it can be a blessing and others it's a pain in the bum! You can say goodbye to quickies

I remember a line from the show "Weeds" where Andy talks about taking an antidepressant. He said something like. " I wasn't depressed anymore, but I gained forty pounds and couldn't get an erection." Not worth it. Be careful with wellbutrin as well, it can cause rhabdomyolysis, especially in individuals who weight train. I took it for a short time and suffered from this, it sucked big time to say the least. Peace.

wow thanks guys! My doctor gave me propranalol in case I got anxiety issues before the meds would kick in. So I talked to him and he said I could take that instead if I feel anxiety. I told him I didnt feel comfortable with the side effects of the medicine; so I will be talking to him about trying another med if any that do not have these adverse effects.

Massive, I will keep Wellbutrin in mind; and 6.8spc I will take this issue into consideration if I think about doing it.

I was given paxil about 10 years ago when my mother past away. I've tried to get off numerous times by weaning, however, the sides are so unberable I keep taking it. I'm still looking for a way to get off of it without getting extremely sick from withdrawals. If you're going through a situational depression like I was then I would never suggest Paxil.

Paxil is very addictive. The best way to get off it is to switch to another SSRI like Prozac for a few months then come off that. It will be much easier.

Paxil, prozac, it all makes you weirded out and crazy. And they all have horrible side effects, and are physicaly and mentaly addictive. If on any of these, and interested in coming off then man up and do it...........after all that is how i kicked my coke habit. Cold turkey, no meetings, no drugs. Just enough is enough.

i think Paxil is a poor choice from your doctor. Too many side effects.

I took it years ago when it first came out. I also gained weight and my life went down hill. I stay away from antidepressants. None of them worked, in fact I got worse on most of them.
