People who smell like shit at the gym

Hey guys! There's a lot of controversy in Scandinavia now, I'm all over nationwide news in Norway.

The thing is this: On Wednesday when I was training legs, two young people came into the training, who smelled absolutely terrible. I smelled them on the other side of the gym. I've worked as a plumber for several years too, so I'm not sensitive to smells. But there were others at the gym at the same time who also reacted strongly.
They came over and trained seated calves raises, almost right next to where I was training squats. I got frustrated, and thought about doing something about it. I set up a camera, went up to them and said:
- Hey guys, do you have a shower at home? Yes, they replied.
- Don't you feel the bad smell? Yes, they replied
- I know it's expensive electricity but. Take a shower next time before you come, hold on for 1 minute, soap and shampoo. That will be great. And I did a thumbs up.
I slapped their faces to hide their identity, and posted it on my Instagram profile. I also wrote hygiene tips there about not using old workout clothes, and use a deodorant. And with good hygiene, it becomes more enjoyable for everyone to work out.
It has gone viral, and a lot of controversial opinions and comments. I also said it in a slightly provocative way, which I know will create attention. Especially here in Norway, where people are easily offended and a lot of snowflakes.
My opinion is: You need to be able to tell people if they smell bad, no one wants them to smell bad, and no one else around the gym either. I think it is a lack of decency and respect if you go to the gym and smell really bad. 15 years ago when I started working out, I would have been sent home by the gym owner if I smelled like shit. Of course, a gym is a place to sweat, but not old sweat that smells like shit.
Many people have been offended by the video I posted, and think it's unnecessary and harassment to speak out. I completely disagree, and it's important to speak out, but I understand that it can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, but otherwise people just stare at them and don't learn.
What's your opinion on this? What do you do if people come to the gym smelling like shit?

I usually just move away from them personally. Not really fond of the smell of Body odor and that funky onion smell

I’m pretty cool with most everyone at my gym, you always see the same people there at the same times so I wouldn’t go out of my way to appear confrontational and feed into bodybuilder/roid rage stereotype. I think there’s already enough people who put the sport or the life in a negative light.

That said basic hygiene is a must. That’s disgusting to not bathe. Maybe it was deserved. I wasn’t there

Yep there’s a woman who trains at my gym that stinks. Her hair which is long is thick with grease so whenever she’s been on a bit of kit it’s like someone has melted a block of lard over it. Pretty grim but with the way things are in the UK if I confronted her I’d be arrested let alone post about it on social media which as I’m truly saddened to say is an illegal offence to post something that could hurt someone’s feelings wnd could land you with a 4 year prison Sentence

Without more specifics in your case, I can tell you from personal experience, I COULD NOT AGREE MORE.

Ive had issues too in the past. One in the past with a friend, "Bro you smell like shit, do you use antiperspirant? You have to...its literally offensive. Like an attack on everyone around you." Problem fixed.

Another guy used to wear boots with no socks. Fucking disgusting. I called him out and everyone got pissed at me. Theres no way no one else couldnt smell that....no way. As you said, total snowflakes. Most of them are good people but holy shit...I cant exist around you or hear what you are saying because your feet are louder than your words.

All that to say, YEAH BUDDY. I havent had this issue in a long time but if I did, I would say something.

Wow I thought social media was bad over here in the USA.

I'll say this - it's good that you brought it to their attention but it's bad that you posted it on IG so don't be surprised that many people got offended. You should have brought it to their attention but not in a way that the whole world could see it (it doesn't matter that their faces were covered)

but you're still young so you let yourself be guided by emotions - it will pass with age😅

Dude that rotting onion smell is the worst.
It's normal to sweat at the gym, but I feel like you have to have to go awhile without showering to smell like onions...

I dont see anything wrong with it. You blocked out their faces and everything, and its relevant to anyone going to the gym so it can serve as a good reminder for people in general. Though, i can see the agrument that i shouldnt have been posted in social media but people cant be such pussies either, dont be so sensitive. Its a good message at the end of the day.

I would personally be angry and annoyed if i smelled bad and nobody told me.

@EspenMuskelbunt1, you’re totally in the right for calling them out on their offensive odor! However, why did you feel the need to record the interaction? Also, why post about it on social media?

I have personally apologized to them for recording. And the reason for I posted it on social media was to get the message out about good hygiene at the gym, and I find a situation that was raw and real. To create attention about the problem. Not to bring me forward as a person, or to put them down
The video is completely within the law, say lawyers and experts on Media Law. Read the following:
– From these pictures and video, there is no one who does not know them well or was at the gym when the video was taken, who would be able to know who this is. And then he has not violated any legal rules about their privacy, says Wessel-Aas, who adds that he does not pronounce on what is morally right or wrong, but refers to the law.– I cannot set the standard for what is good public manners, even if some may of course think that this is done badly. But legally it is not a problem.– The law is never completely black and white. But when they are only identifiable to themselves or a few people at the gym, it cannot be considered defamatory either. It is not public display if they cannot be recognized, says Jon Wessel Aas, lawyer and expert on Media Law.

In my decades in the gym i can count one 1 hand the number of people that truly offended me. Takes many days of not washing. 1-2 day old sweat is no big deal for me. I have worked with guys that were much worse then anyone in the gym. I worked with a guy once that once i noticed his greasy hair and stink and the same clothes it was 3 more weeks till a manger told him to shower and change clothes before he came back to work or they would send him home and say he was a safety hazard to people health. That was not the last time they talked to him about this over the next couple years. There were others too but not as bad.

I get everything you’re saying, but it’s just an era difference is all I guess. I’d have no problem telling someone they smell ripe in person and just leave it at that. I’d consider the issue handled. It wouldn't cross my mind to put out a general message for others in other areas.

Social media wasn’t around when I started going to public gyms. I get it’s a thing now and many people’s lives revolve around it. They also are heavily influenced and informed by it. It’s just the new era is all. I don’t have an issue with it. I just don’t partake in it.

Moving forward I’d just be cognizant of what I post as not cause a shit storm. Keep doing your part my man!!
