Phil Hernon

235 looking like 300

90s was the golden era

I miss phil learned a lot from him
Same here... we used to have some good natured back and forth's via email when I was working with him. I think I frustrated him with my questions sometimes but he was always honest that's for sure.

I think Phil even to this day may have the most posts and activity on the site.
He was a big part for decades and one of the founding members.

I wish I knew his philosophy 10 years before I did. It really changed the game for me.

He was really nice/fun on the phone.

He definitely contributed a lot of good information. At some point, on Instagram, one of us said something that inflamed the other, and we went back-and-forth for a little while, pretty aggressively. Looking back, I can’t even remember what it was about, and it embarrasses me now to think that I participated in any type of “Internet beef“… He definitely had a lot of great contributions. and I wish I wish I had been a bit less immature, and I wish he was still around.

I was pretty close w Phil. Worked w him off and on for several years. He was brash or could be and he knew it. We went around a few times, once quite ruthlessly but he was a friend. And, he meant well. There were things he did that I didn’t agree w over the years but I sure hope he is resting easy. He shaped this path for me and I’ll always be grateful of our time spent.

I miss him, was an incredible friend to me and never steered me in the wrong direction on ANYTHING!!!!!!! Wish he could see what a beautiful young woman his daughter has become 🫶🏻🙏🏻 Just spoke with his wife the other day about him…R.I.P to one of the real O.G.’s

Phil was a great friend and mentor to me. I miss him deeply.
I think often about things he taught me. Among the most important principles was that of sustainability. RIP Phi!

I like phill a bunch. When I hired him back in the days and the ridiculous low price he charge. I was thinking man this is cheap. Once he sent me the workout and told me eat only when you are hungry. I thought I got ripped off but I still went ahead with it. And let me tell you it was the best size and strength I ever put on. Man I miss him R.I.P brother

I hired him as a coach probably 15 years ago off of here. I always liked his no BS communication and he was always so knowledgeable. I almost rehired him and was going to train with him in person because he moved to my area in Northeast Florida, but then his wife text messaged me and told me he had died. Would’ve been really cool to hang with him in person but never got the chance. RIP Phil!

I got somewhere i will find it and post the pages.
I would be very interested in reading the article. I have already searched for it, but haven't been able to find it anywhere. I would also be interested to know what your training with Phil was like back then. I trained under him in 2007, when it was a three-way split (I have already posted about this here), but what was his training like before that? It would be great if you could describe it in detail here.

One thing you can say is Phil was ahead of the times with his ideas today all anyone talks about science wise is training a muscle 2-3 times a week with low volume , even his train full body daily is catching on in the science base community

I will look for it. It was training a bodypart 2 to 3 times a week heavy weights to failure and low sets. We didn't see eye to eye on training exercises he was was heavily focused on dips and lateral for one I preferred heavy presses and wide grip upright rows for chest and shoulders.
The training was similar to what @LATS
has posted in the past.

The article was in Muscular Development 1995 had Craig Titus on the cover in amazing shape covering his privates with a palm leaf.

One of the best peices of advice was from Phil. For shoulders he told me to concentrate more on laterals from different directions and not concentrate on heavy presses as much.

A message Phil sent me 9/18/2009

Day 1-chest, shoulders, triceps, quads, crunches
Day2- Back ( pull ups-rows) biceps, hamstrings, calvs.

Same exercises......declines or dips for chest/squats for quads.......stiff leg deads for hams.......rotate between seated and standing for calv.......1 set crunches..........HERE is the key......pick a weight you can do 7-10 reps with.........do set, rest 1 second, do next set, rest 1 second, do 3rd set..........train every day until u need a day off.

Phil’s training philosophy as gleamed from PM from my early days here, did evolve over time but his most valuable piece of advice, at least early on, and one that has stuck with me and produced my best results (it was a training style I used before I ever knew of him) was to train the muscle intensely, briefly, and frequently. He said would you rather stimulate the muscle for growth once a week or three times a week? But that changed as a function of time. Another valuable piece of advice was to eat when hungry with most people not really understanding what real hunger was like.

That’s my takeaway.

He was always kind and generous with me the times we talked on the phone (and not about bodybuilding).

Dens is finally able to hold his head high with his 1 second rest claim.

He was definitely a character. So much great advice. So many arguments :D He was a great member even after he went a bit mental later on. His death was very sad but also frustrating because of the details surrounding it.

I remember people loving him and people disliking him on here. I never got involved. I did like his tips on the board regarding lifting and diet.

One thing I have kept in my routine is Phil's 2 DB row. Full ROM and pulling the DBs to the hips. Great exercise.
