Two trainers who work at the gym get to the freeweight the floor and start there workout

These guys are doing alternate push ups on medicine balls one for each hand followed by a set of cable benching thats right they are using a cable fly machine with a bench (one of few machines on the floor)

It is hilarious the one guy is like 510 180 and the other is about 58 160 and there doing pushups on medicine balls and cable presses.

Where are these idiots learning this stuff? Anyway I did attempt one and I fell over laughing it was like trying to rub your stomach while patting your head.

Can I tear into these guys next time? I mean it is kind of sad. The worst part is people coming into the gym are to intimidated to approach lifters and these idiots are the people they are going to emulate.

I was using a free guest pass and they worked there in case anyone is wondering how I resisted asking them what the fuck they were thinking

I've seen folks doing this myself. I guess for some sports it can be beneficial.

They are training fast twitch muscle fiber. A lot of athlete's train this way. Very good for core muscle, explosivness, balance & speed.

I guess you guys have never seeen the pic of the guy doing barbell squats on a medicine ball

THEY ARE NOT TRAINING THEY ARE BEGGING FOR HELP

I am not going to bother explaining the whole fast twitch muscle fiber bullshit that is being touted to a guy with 2 post no offense

Yes people do this stuff but it is still wrong wrong wrong

Your chest is not getting stronger by balancing on a ball while doing pushups

Its all just fancy silly shit so trainers can have jobs

And make girls feel comfortable at the gym(again no offense) they say this won't bulk you up helps stabilize and lengthen muscle

The muscle either fire or they don't they can't tell if your standing on our head

Saw a girl doing alternate dumbell curls standing on one leg the other day who is teaching this shit?

Balance-freeweights
Super balance - dumbells
Speed - higher reps
Explosiveness- heavy reps
Core muscle if you are lifting heavy your abs are flexed every workout whether its curls, flat presses, pullups, squats, side lateralo raises your whole body is tense every rep every exercise

Thats is why people that actually lift have abs without doing any primary work for them and no all the idiots in the weight room are not actual lifters

they arent bodybuilders...This training works great for athletes who arent worried about size...I did it a lot in track and it definetly helped with that but its not gonna add any size...They do it all the time in my gym too..it looks really stupid and all the guys look like queers even out of the gym...funny things about these guys is that they arent athletes, they just want beach bodies..I think they would be better off with the basics rather than standing on a cushion getting a medicine ball thrown back and forth...

There is a use for this as it shuld be used for sport specific training as J-man said.

When I played baseball in college and professionally, I used these workout programs and they were awsome. When I started to used this training later on in my college careerit drastically reduced my 60 yard dash time ( a measure used by scouts for speed) and was never stronger or more explosive or hit better, it really improved my overall athletic ability.

And yes Vespa I lifted weights while I did this training too, and was always pretty strong.....

So yes there is a place for this but if trainers are doing it for your average client then they should just refer them to pilates, it will do the same thing for them..:p

Check out Crossfit.com they have some pretty cool work outs there. They also do a ton of basic exercises - deadlifts, pull ups, push ups - but its cool conditioning.

Those types of workouts are designed for an atheletic purpose, not bodybuilding. I have seen some exercised that do just look plain ol stupid....but some of that stuff really works.

We used the same exercises in boxing. Builds explosive powerful punches. So maybe use caution in "tearing" into them!!! Definetely sport specific exercises.

Not everybody in the gym wants or needs to be a bodybuilder. Most major league trainers in all fields have their guys train using plyometrics and many powerlifters use plyometrics to improve their lifts with great success and that I can vouch for from experience so dont knock it till you try it.

as bad as it looks... and honestly, it doesn't look pretty. We used to do a lot of this type of training. Especially during hockey season. Like doing pushups with board on a ball or squats standing on a board with a cylinder underneath (like a see-saw). Since it creates an amount of unpredictability in the lift in a sport where every hit you take or give is unpredictable. I think there is merit but be careful. It's an easy way to injure yourself just like in the sport you're training for.

Definitely good for the smaller stabilizer muscles that frequently are the first to get injured or torn during a game.

whats that saying?

"Live & let live"

.....now if they comment on YOUR workout........ unleash the hounds of HELL!

Absolutely sports specific exersises, like a lot of you have said. I have used plyometrics extensively as a Muay Thai fighter and they do wonders. The alternating pushups on a medicine ball, if done correctly, build great upper body endurance and give you that snap on your punches. Training like this is why a fighter can hit harder that somebody who just weight trains, even when they are outweighed by 50 lbs or more. When combined with free weight training, the results are even more pronounced. Plyometric training is incredible, but it has it's place and people who are just starting to exercise for fitness shouldn't jump right into plyos because it can be very hard on the joints, tendons, and other connective tissues. And yes I only have a few posts, but I have more fights than I do posts, as well as a Associates Dergree in Sports Medicine. So I have some experience on which to base my comments.

Most likely they are NASM trainers. Any BBer would laugh at what they are tought. NASMs focus is more on core strenth, flexability and balance which ends up being stupid movements on exercise balls and doing everything on one foot. That kind of training has its place but I dont think Id pay a trainer 50 dollars an hour to give me a mix of calastetics and pilates exercises to do:rolleyes:

ever thought that every person coming in a gym is not supposed to be a bodybuilder ?

I train athletes and I do a lot of plyometrics exercises in combination with heavy weights for a lot of sports (from football to boxing)

no they are not that stupid

my thoughts exactly

Once again, mike1107, I have to totally agree with you. Some of the best professional athletes in the world use these training techniques. I'll probably be mixing in some of this training in the upcoming months since I've gotten a little too bulky. I tipped 250 and am now down to under 240. I sprained my elbow skiing (just because of my weight) and wouldn't dare getting on the field or ice at this weight (my ankles and knees just couldn't handle it). I'd tear something for sure. I love to be big. I love to be strong. But not at the expense of losing all my other games! During a BBing comp, I always dig when they do backflips and handstands and splits - it shows me that in addition to strength and HUGE muscle, they can still be active enough to play! Maybe it's me but I WANT IT ALL!

some people includes plyometrics exercises in their bodybuider routines under the name of GPP (General Physical Prepareness)

you're right, it will bring a lot advantages to your body

I agree it has its place it works wonders for athletes but I if a person gos to a trainer and says I want to gain 25lbs of lean mass plyometrics core strenth and flexability alone wont cut it.

And there in is the problem, most trainers (not all) are only trained to train people with above said tools so they end up putting everybody on the ball doing prone lat rows with 10lb dbs. I dont have a problem with plyometrics I have a problem with the way MOST trainers put EVERYBODY on them for the ENTIRE workout.

never seen a trainer put a a trainee on plyo only and for those who do,this is ridiculous !!

and it's more stupid to do entire workout on plyo/year round, considering how much it stresses the body and the time it takes to recover from a plyometrics workout
