Wondering what some of the guys think of incorporating a post workout shake during pre-contest prep.

Not having competed for last six years, its been an integral part of my training. A mix of True Protein whey, waxe maize, some skim milk, and some cranberry juice. But realize now during a contest prep may not be the best thing, at least to a certain point into the prep. particularly the waxe maize.

I definetly each a protein/carb meal within an hour or so additionally.

As I will be competing again this November, anyone;s thoughts on this would be most appreciated!

For me about 6-8 weeks out i switch all my shakes with LBAs.

I think it would more depend of what your diet consist of leading up to the show , obviously if your on a very carb restricted diet it would be a bad idea buit if your just coating into it then i don't think it would be as big of a problem.
Also depends on what "supplements" your taking i would assume.

I've been told that milk will make you hold water in fat cells not allowing you to come down as far as normal but i'm not sure about all that , I've heard of guys drinking milk up to the show

Ive alwasys used PWO shake during my contest prep just as I would in doing so for an offseason and Ive had no prob getting myself or clients of mine in shape with the use of them.

Whether Im carb cycling or going keto. Obviously carbs are only included PWO with my shakes if Im carb cycling and for Keto it would be protein only, followed by a whole food meal within 1 hour.

i stop all my post workout shakes at 7 weeks out. i switch to protein drink and 1 cup of strawberries until 4 weeks out. then i only have a protein shake from that point on

I never really saw anything wrong with post workout shakes during your prep as long as it fits into the overall scheme of things. It all depends what is in your shake

rich in l-leucine = insulin spike and anabolic...stops catabolism without the need of extra cals from carbs :)

I would continue the pro. drinks pwo but eliminate the carbs from them about 4-6 weeks out( depending on where your at). Stop the pro. drink 1 week out.

by the way what show will you be doing?

People do it on Timed Carb diets all the time leading to the show. They just have zero carbs until post workout, and then they get their carbs in post workout. When you are that carb restricted it's not really going to matter if it's high glycemic or not as long as it fits into a calorie range.
