would it be a better idea to use a Caseinate powder or a Whey Isolate powder 30 minutes before a workout. each work lasts 45 minutes to an hour. looking at atleast a 1 hour 35 minute period before a post-workout shake.

It was my understanding the caseanate protein was absorbed very slowly (perhaps over 8hrs) making it good for prolonged periods of fasting such as overnight; were as whey was absorbed rapidly, providing a bolus of aminos perfect for primining an anabolic environment. IMHO I would use whey and save the caseanate for a different use. I have heard some people mix these though and have good results. I am interested in other's opinions.
 
Begginner section?

Whey isolate has a higher concentration of BCAA's which are muscle sparing. It is also absorbed and more quickly, perfect for pre and postworkout. A combination of the two wouldn't be bad for pre workout either. eg: whey in milk
 
To be honest I experienced better gains in strenght and faster recovery when I replaced my post workout shake with essential amino acid pills. My new strategy goes like this:

Pre-Workout: EAA's
During Workout: BCAA's and Glutamine
Post-Workout: EAA's
One hour later: Solid food meal.

My strength has increased, and my body composition has really improved.
 
preworkout

You are goin to want some carbs like oatmeal. You need this more than a protein shake. If your body has plenty of carbs for fuel it wont need to burn protein for energy.
 
I normally use a mix of caseinate and whey isolate for my shakes throughout the day. i usually do this pre-workout too and i do include some oatmaeal here too Tman. night time i use only cas. whey isolate only for post-workout.

I was just curious if whey would be better pre-workout or something that might release a lil bit slower??

thanks for the reply diezel. I really like the BCAA during a workout too. I think it makes a difference. i should probably buy some more of that.

They whey iso should be perfect. I also always use some malto AND fast-acting carbs preworkout.
Post workout its straight fast acting carbs and whey iso. I even find my self sipping this mid workout if I feel Im getting fatigued.
The caseinate I used mixed like shit!
