Prep coach

Do like many of us did and start off by reading a few books. That’s all
You need to get going again.
Any question is also easily found or answered here for free. Step1. You gotta want it and don’t be lazy w the research or hard work.

Download Cronometer and log everything you eat

Search this board for "best training split", pick something you think you will enjoy

Download Fitnotes (android) and track your weights/reps

Get to work for 2 months and then revisit getting a coach at that point

Congratulations on overcoming your alcohol addiction! Bodybuilding can be an excellent avenue for focusing your energy into a positive direction. If you know yourself well, and feel that you're more accountable with a coach, then I say go that route.

But I share a lot of common ground with other posts. The lifestyle is a marathon and not a sprint. If setting a goal for this fall is helpful for you, consider setting a lean mass gain goal for the fall with your coach. Then map out the next year of growth and ultimately contest prep. Most coaches aren't into the dirty bulking phases anymore, so if you're concerned about putting on a bunch of fat, I think that concern will be overblown.

A coach will give you good diet advice, good training advice, and likely give you the baby steps on PEDs. It's when all three of these are put together that you see the best progress. Good luck!

Agreed. In 1985 I mail ordered the Universal Bodybuilding courses.
The other day out of curiosity I skimmed through some of that material for the first time in decades and man those guys knew what they were doing back then!
Now I’m not gonna start eating 3 cans of pork & beans every day and I’m not gonna start making full fat ice cream “malt” protein shakes ….. but for the training they had a lot of excellent points.

I've been training athletes for over 30 years. You need to focus on gaining muscle. Take 15-18 months before you even think about a cutting diet, (I'm not kidding, there is no short cut, live the lifestyle) just to get bigger. Figure out your macro's. That is the most important part of your program. I'm like Mack, I only train 4-5 clients at a time. Not taking any new ones right now. I'm even more expensive lol! Plus, I have a degree in sports nutrition, You get what you pay for.
Congrats on getting sober!!!

Long story short alcoholic for the past almost a decade. I work full time at a recycling plant. So a lot of cardio lol but I want to do my first show in October. I’ve prepped before with a couple coaches on here. Got sick or too much of a bitch to finish. My mind is right. This pic is literally me barely me working out. A few times a month barely any gear. I just want to do what I really wanted to do.

Is the alcoholic/alcohol part of your life behind you now?

I understand people saying it’s easy just do it yourself. As a recovering alcoholic support is always best. If you don’t want my money then I’ll find someone else.

Well…life shows something completely different🤷🏼‍♂️

So true.

I want to say maybe 20 years ago DC made exactly this point. Guys aren't failing to become bodybuilders by being unable to lean down. They are failing in overwhelming massive percentage by not having enough muscle.

Same as it ever was.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I’m almost thinking you should cut first that way you could do a proper bulk or “offseason” without being 20%+ bf and insulin resistant (which will make you put on fat much easier)

But if you start lean with good insulin sensitivity and diet you should be able to blow up and stay relatively lean throughout the bulk if you do it right

I literally want to bite a coach to tell me what to do. This is becoming crazy. Also I am diabetic I take lantus and humalog. Maybe I should have made the thread title better. My apologies. I don’t understand the critiiscm in paying someone to make me better physically

I mean I definitely wouldn’t recommend biting your coach

Are you type 1 diabetic?

And hiring a coach isn’t a bad idea, but in the end it still really comes down to you. They could write you the best meal and training plan ever written but if you don’t follow it exactly or slack off on meals/days it won’t be of as much benefit. I think that’s moreso what people are getting at when they say you need to lock in first

If you want them to invest in you then you need to invest in them.

The only way any coach is going to take a chance on you is if you pay them at least 6 months in advance. This is industry standard, but more importantly as you said yourself you have quit multiple times.

You need a year before you compete IMO at this 100% whether that’s with a coach or by yourself living each day of each phas

Finally a positive post. Thank you.

Sorry meant hire. Lol. I’m in it 100% or I wouldn’t waste my money. No one knows what I’ve been through the past year plus. I am locked in. But didn’t a karate kid get helped my Mr myagi. Not shamed an pissed away?

Finally a positive post. Thank you.

A little secret- the post from this place that have motivated me the most were the ones I hated the most.

Competing in this sport is a lot like giving up alcohol. The decision is easy. It’s everyday that comes after it that is the work that doesn’t stop. This sport is about aggressive patience- choices today determine how you look and are 3-6 months from now.

You can commit to a coach for 6 months, sure. If you do I’d challenge you to work with someone who not only cares about your plan, but your mind as you will need it.

But my best advice would be to start a log here and hold yourself accountable first and prove you can do it. Not for us, but yourself. Myself and others would happily offer critiques if you did so and do it for free. My first two shows (which I won) I did my own preps. I have zero regrets.

Either way, pick a path and commit to it for 6-12 months.

I think Luki invited you to fill out the questionnaire. If you work better in a coach/athlete environment go for it and who cares what others say. Sounds reasonable - lots of people do.

A coach is not support/your cheerleader brother
