Price increase on Whey

I have a little bit of inside info on this, due to China getting strict on manufacturing guidelines the price on bulk whey powder is about to skyrocket. Our prices on our in house WPI 5 lbers are going fo 36.65 retail to 62.99 retail on July 21st. Of course my cost will be 50% of that

THIS IS GOING TO EFFECT EVERY BRAND GUYS, ON, EAS, etc.... you name it it's gonna go up by the end of the month.

Buy up what you can afford now do not wait.

There will be some other supps that are going to go up to as well, like ALL Vitamin C bulk, ester, asorbic, buffered, etc.... Amino's as well.

I was unaware China were a big player in the Whey industry, it is just a by product of cheese making so abundant all over the world.

I cant see it being an issue myself.

The BULK ingriedients are bought from China for most of the big players in the Supp industry. They have gotten more strict on guidelines and are testing more often and are throwing batches out now as before they did not pay much attention. This will effect ALL manafactures trust me I not just an employee on the ground I run multiple units for a big player in the supp industry.....

Slightly incorrec info

The global whey market is and has been running at 100% since late last year.

Due to demang globally, there diaries can NOT cope with demand. Price rises are and will affect EVERYONE...in Europe prices have already gone up!

In USA they are and will go up more.

It is expected that by Dec 07 or March 08 capacity may have increased to serve the demands....

China is NOT a major player in the World Whey Market, Europe and New Zealand is (NZ being the highest quality Whey you can get).....

However, items coming out of China will be more money due to tax changes as of 1st July 07

This thread is sadly to little to late. The price increases have already happened. I work on the retail side of the supp industry and ALL major players have already raised prices. I'm sure it will continue to rise but it started to long ago.

Thank you, I am referring to BULK ingredients not the actual WHEY itself.... this is why prices have gone up. EAS, TWINLAB and Cytosport have already raised some....

You stated in your 1st post,

What ingredients are you referring to, flavorings? As that is about all there is on whey powder that is not whey.

As Jay said NZ is the main man as far as Whey is concerned.

I prefer my Whey unflavored, so it wont effect me too much,

, (china that is).

It's been happening for a while. Labrada, Optimum, Dymatize have raised prices as much as 30-40% on some items. It's the whey protein itself that has gone up in price/demand. It sucks but thats the crappy part of the industry you have to deal with. More reason to be eating more solid foods for protein sources anyway.

Rise in retail milk prices predicted

The real cost of increased gas prices may not show up just at the pump. It may well be reflected in the higher cost of the milk poured on cereal every morning in Long Island homes.

Retail prices for milk, currently $3.25 per gallon nationwide, are likely to follow a 44-percent increase in the milk price that dairy farmers can charge to retailers (from $1.44 a gallon in January to $2.07 a gallon in July).

This increase is due in part to a rise in ethanol, said Christopher Galen, spokesman for the National Milk Producers Federation. These increases are likely to continue throughout the summer, said Galen, who predicts that milk farm prices may climb as high as $2.17 a gallon.

"The rising price of milk is just one more thing that makes it expensive to live on Long Island," said Pearl Kamer, chief economist for the Long Island Association.

New York milk prices are controlled by a national milk pricing process that is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and is based on a range of factors, including supply, demand and the cost of production, both nationally and abroad. Recent milk increases have been influenced by the rise in demand in corn for ethanol, as consumers seek alternative forms of energy.

It is less clear how much farm price increases for milk will raise future supermarket prices. The recent 60-cent increase in farm prices, for example, has shown up as a 20-cent increase in national retail milk prices. Grocery stores are not required to follow set minimum prices for milk and thus may advertise lower milk prices to interest customers in shopping at their store.

"Retailers often drop the price on milk because it is considered a loss leader," said Beth Meyer, spokeswoman for the American Dairy Association.

whey will not be affected by the chinese, like others stated it is a product of diry(cheese) and has nothing to do with the china at all...

i buy mine from davisco foods in wisconsin, (i have also purchesed from newzeland also) it is all manufactured from cow to whey protein powder right there! and there are no bulk ingredients in it? what the hell are "bulk ingredients" in whey?, like nytol said, theres nothing in there but whey protein powder...

a lot of things we use on a daily basis are made in china, and we might see a slight increase in these costs, but not to the degree of 2 fold what we pay retail for them now!

The price of whey and milk are also being raised due to the increase in corn. Farmers are able to get more selling the corn for alternative fuel sources than selling as a crop or feed. Whey prices have raised significantly in the last year, and are expected to rise another bit soon.
