Protein powder cost.. wtf?! LOL

This thread turned into quite the read. The upper upper echelon of string pullers have got all of us by the short and curlies. It’s across the board everywhere from the top down. I know prices have gone up at TN but pretty much every supplement company I come across (outside of massive ones like Optimum) I look at their WPI product as a benchmark and it’s always 25-30% more expensive than Dante’s and I know there’s a decent chance TN manufactured it anyway.

Back in the day there was less options and we just choked down low grade WPC bc that was all that was made. I remember holding my nose and getting down some pretty awful Designer Protein then being all bloated and gassy. With nothing to compare it to I always that it was just bc of the amount of protein. I switched to MetRx which wasn’t as bad but that’s a MR so the macros weren’t quite the same obviously and it was expensive. Eventually when WPI based products became a thing the markup was crazy. It must’ve been those multi page fake scientific study advertisements driving up the Nitrotech cost. When TP/TN came along and you could get products way cheaper, higher quality, and customizable, it was a no brainer. There’s a reason they are still crushing it.
Do you guys still get gassy and bloated if you take a lactose enzyme with your protein drink? They are cheap

I mix my whey with Fairlife skim milk, which already has the lactase enzyme added. No gas, no bloating but I heard mixing it with skim milk isn’t hardcore.😂
mmmmm the force is strong in this one ^^^ (Yoda voice)

I actually mix mine with FL too. I didn’t consider there was any extra lactase enzyme left to take care of anything extra. Good idea.

I’ve never tried taking specific enzymes. I tried a WPI/WPC blend not too long ago bc and it still gave me noticeable stomach issues. It’s probably easier to just avoid WPC than add the enzymes in though just for that.

Legit question - most of us are getting a big portion of protein from various animal sources and that doesn't seem to be hurting us. Some people here seem to have big issues with WPC. I recall that before whey and designer protein, egg protein (on the old PER scale) was the best protein.

Why not go with a different protein source if whey is bothersome or expensive? Is Whey isolate still cheaper these days than all alternatives due to relative high volume production? I figure if it's that much better more people would be eating whey and rice vs chicken and rice.

Has to be a reason I figure?

They're idiots. I couldn't imagine knowingly consuming something that makes me feel like shit. If the whey I use gave me any issues, I'd just stop consuming it and look for better alternatives. I do also find it funny when people shit on people who use Whey Blends that have no digestive issues. Like cool, you have issues but I don't. So I should stop consuming something because YOUR body can't handle it. 😂

I used the protein from Ironmind when I was younger getting ready for a PL meet. I think it was mostly milk protein isolate. Not quite the same but I don’t think it gave me GI issues. It had a really milkshake mouthfeel and tasted vaguely like an almond cookie. I was at the bottom of my weight class (242) and after training up for the meet and pushing calories to get strong for 12 weeks,I almost missed the 275 cutoff.

Yup but I drink Fairlife regardless and I prefer my shakes with skim milk. I like milk and fair life has great macros all on its own. 8 oz has 13 grams of protein, 6 carbs and 0 fat. I dont have a lot of it in a day, usually 8oz but I dont see any negatives to including it, just positives for me.

I agree. I only use a similar amount and the macros are decent.
It is the first thing that goes when im cutting calories though. Followed by whey which gets replaced with "real food" which is for satiety more than anything.

WPC and my water gives me no bloat or gas. Now when i was a kid using a lot of nonfat powdered milk as my protein source that was a different thing.

That was old school right there!

I found them to do nothing for me, regardless of how many I take. I live on lactose free or raw milk, lactose free or raw milk cheeses and CFM WPI only. Absolutely anything else, it destroys me.
I did think that the enzyme tablets were the answer for me, but unfortunately not.

That sucks. Your body must not produce any lactase at this point, pretty normal for it to decrease as we age. I get by with the tablets when I need to and can go without for small quantities. A Couple 9000 FCC tabs of Lactaid per slice of pizza does the trick for me.

I still remember being a young, slightly clueless guy fresh out of rehab with absolutely no money. This was about 16–17 years ago right around when I joined this board. So the details are a bit fuzzy. But I do remember buying a something like 50 or 70 pounds bucket of protein for around $150. I think it had a name referencing the recession that was taking place. I might be off on the exact numbers, but the point is this, Dante always took care of us. I can’t even count how many broke friends I sent home with giant Ziploc bags full of protein. Dante was basically feeding a whole generation of poor bodybuilders, and I’ll always appreciate that. Fast forward to now, life is good. I can buy whatever I need, and I still use TN (Debitterized Hydrolyzed Whey Protein + Team Skip). Some things just don’t need changing. Huge thanks to Dante for having our backs back then.

Lol I have become a serious CHEAP ASS! I WONT eat out at restaurants, I won't buy as many health supplements as I use to, if I eat steak I get it early at Walmart when they mark down the previous days steaks (sometimes half price). I drive my Ford fusion to work more than I drive my truck and always use coupons and look for sales as much as I can and I made more money this year than I ever have. That's just old man Brad now.

Same!

I make 98% of all my food.

Recently switched to more chicken than beef. Most beef is ground, and the fat is boiled out. No steaks unless it’s a special occasion.

Caffeine is homemade coffee, tea, and capsules only.

Frozen veggies and blueberries from Costco.

Health supplements are severely limited to what’s needed based on blood work only… I never just take something for the sake of taking it only. When possible, I’ll cap my own.

Water from the tap or the $4/32 case from Costco.

If I’m out and about for too long without prepped meals, I fast instead of going to a restaurant or convenience store.

There are just certain things most people buy out of convenience that I just can’t for any reason justify wasting money on.

When I do go to restaurants, I always tip generously… because I probably only go a few times a year.

Being ugly is a huge money saver. No chicks = huge savings. 😂

I wouldn’t even consider myself a miser though, it just seems like modern culture is willing to dispose of their income in ways that would have seen wildly irresponsible 20 years ago. If I really want something, the money is there. Impulse vs logic.

Same man, i tried different kinds of enzymes etc nothing helps, i drink normal milk im spending extra time on the can !

Do you guys read/understand ingredients?
I do. I see whey protein as the first ingredient. What do you see of suspect here?

I see it as garbage. I'd rather buy eggs with the money.

That crap has 70% protein as opposed to CFM WPI which has 94%. It will bloat me and give me the runs. It has almost 30% of shit that I don't want.

Rather than spend your money on that, buy eggs. If you are hell bent on having shakes, buy powdered eggs. Way better quality protein.
