Protein while cutting

I need some opinions. Do you guys think that you have a better chance of maintaining muscle while cutting by eating smaller amounts of protein more often or bigger amounts less frequently. For example 30g every 1.5 hrs as oppossed to 60g every 3 hrs. I would think that the thermic effect of digestion, coupled with a steadier pool of aminos would mean that smaller more frequent meals would be more beneficial. What does everyone think?

My own personal thought is that "perfect" protein consumption is getting 20-30grams of Whey Isolate every 1-1.5 hours. This doesn't include the meals of whole food you should consume, which should equal at least 50-60% of your total Protein and Calories for the day.

Only Protein I choose to drink is Whey Isolate, except maybe a huge glass of Milk before bedtime when i dont want to wake up inbetween sleep to get more protein in.

Personally, I'd like to/try to eat 8-10 times daily, with the protein looking kinda like this.

Meal #1 - 6AM - Whole food meal = 50grams Protein

Meal #2 - 8AM - Protein drink =30grams Protein

Meal #3 - 10:30am - Whole food meal = 30-40grams Protein

Meal #4 - 12:30pm - Protein drink = 30grams Protein

Meal #5 - 3pm - Whole food meal = 30-40grams Protein

Workout at 4pm to 5pm

Meal #6 - 5pm - Post workout Protein drink = 50+grams Protein

Meal #7 - 6 or 6:30pm - Whole Food meal = 50grams Protein

Meal #8 - 8 or 9pm - Whole food meal = 30grams Protein

Meal #9 - 10pm - Protein Drink = 30-40grams Protein **

** = Sometimes I'll sleep 4 hours, and divide meal #9's protein into 2 meals which i'll eat at drink at 10pm and around 2am. But I like to sleep, so usually i just get 30-40grams before i retire for the night.

Minimum Daily Protein intake = 330grams
Usual Daily Protein intake = 400grams

Good question, I have always tried to pack in a minimum of 50g protein every 2-3 hours but lately I am questioning this strategy.

Does anybody have a guess at the maximum protein that the body can digest in one meal??

There will be nutrition pundits who claim that you can only digest 30 gm per meal, but I don't think there have been any studies to that effect. I don't think anyone really knows.
Personally, I go for about 50 mg per meal over the course of 6 or 7 meals. That 7th meal is usually in the middle of the night when I get up to whiz.

its impossible to put an exzact number on it, there are so many factors that can effect it.

For

FOr cutting smaller more frequent meals can only help, I dont see how it can harm, just be careful with low carbs and pure whey since it can covert to glucose, I like to mix my whey with some sugar free citrucel or some flax slows it down, etc

Shawn interesting idea. What brand of whey protein isolate do you use.

You said you try to get whey protein every 1 to 1.5 hours. The diet you listed looks like it is every 3.5 to 5 hours or do you also do more shakes?

Not trying to flame just trying to learn.

Thanks.

I generally follow the outline i gave above. My remark about getting protein ever 1-1.5 hours would be my ideal/perfect situation. I personally cannot get meals in that often due to my schedule. But if i could, i would. I need a sugar momma so i dont have to work anymore! haha:D

My Whey Isolate comes from http://www.proteinfactory.com

I also think that there are far too many variables in humans to determine maximum protein uptake per meal or on a schedule.
