I plan to compete in the 220 lb weight class in a couple of months. Right now I'm about 225 lbs and pretty lean, I'm guessing 10-12% bf. Whats the highest I can let my weight get where I can still make weight with out doing anything over the top drastic?

My rule of thumb is 8 lbs before you notice any strength loss. We used Lasik the day of weigh in (day before meet). Keep some Pedalight (I pefer the grape) as soon as you weigh in. 5 lbs shouldn't be too difficult. GL!

Thanks, i'm not worried at this weight, I'm more worried about if I get to around 235 would I lose considerable strength trying to come down to 220 in a weeks time.

Depends on when your sanctioning body sets its scale times. Can vary greatly.

I plan on lifting in the APF I believe it's a 24 hour weigh in.

If it's a 24 hour weigh in you can easily drop 10+ pounds in water and then eat your ass off that whole day before the meet.

I've dropped 5 - 10 pounds easily a couple times just through water manipulation and I'm not that heavy, 198/220 weight class usually.

I've heard of guys dropping 20+ pounds for 24 hour weigh ins. I know Matt Kroc claims to have cut something like 25 - 30 pounds for a meet in the past.

As long as you properly re-hydrate after your weigh in, your strength will not be affected.

The lifters I've trained can typically get away with about a 10-12lb drop and be fine. Then again they lift in 275 and 308 so you are talking a little different beast with that.

Myself having competed at 220 I like to keep it less than 10 because I too start to notice strength loss at I'd say 8-10lbs. But you shouldn't have too much trouble getting rid of 8-10lbs of water in a short time frame. Just have a few good eating spots picked out. Just make sure you don't screw yourself with that, I've been in that boat too where I feel like garbage after my refeed. Guess that's just the nature of the beast.

What APF meet will you be at? That's also my federation of choice (one of I should say).

The New York State Spring Iron Frenzy on April 13th. The goal is to get the Raw Unity Elite Standard (1791) or above. It's going to take some hard work, but I'm pretty sure I can get it. It's going to be my first powerlifting competition though so hopefully everything goes smooth.

Here's a link to the info for the meet: http://bluecollarbarbell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2013-SPRING-IRON-FRENZY2.pdf

Best of luck to you man! Hopefully everything goes smoothly. You'll be amazed at the knowledge you leave your first meet with. I remember my first meet, the things i thought I knew before it and the things I knew after were incredibly different.

Powerlifting has been one of the most supportive communities I've ever been a part of. Definitely why I'm so passionate about the sport.

For sure. The powerlifting community is unlike any other sport. Everybody is friendly at meets, it feels like you're hanging out with family.
