Quad Tendon Rupture...AGAIN!

Hi all,

Two years ago I tripped over my cat on some stairs and my right quad tore off of the kneecap. This is an auto-injury where the quad fires too hard in response to trauma and rips the tendon off. It's fairly rare. I had surgery and about 3 months of rehab, couldn't drive and had to wear a brace for about 7 weeks, etc. Had to put off that year's contest plans (it was to be my comeback year after many years off) Obviously lost lots of strength and some size, and it took over a year to get back up to former leg strength. :(

So, I was going to make my BBing contest comeback THIS year, just turned 50 so I figured I could do well in over-50 masters...then 6 weeks ago, guess what?! I fell down the OTHER stairs in my home and did it to the OTHER leg. :eek:

This time it seems to be healing quicker than the other one, but still....And FYI, yes, I was on a heavy cycle each time, so that may have contributed.

Just wanted to share this with some fellow BBers here.

Has anyone else here had, or know anyone who has had, this injury?
 
Wow, sorry to hear this. Little Puss needs to be out-doors only if involved a second time...

You and I are in the same ship as I type this Brother!

I did a 100% rupture of my right quad tendon back in '99 when I was riding dirt bikes and had to put my right foot down quickly to prevent falling over.

One month ago I slip on my outside basement stairs and my left leg folds up underneath me and I 'ride' it down to the bottom with my knee screaming at me the whole way. I knew exactly what had happened. 100% tear of my left quad tendon. Just had it repaired last Monday, the 28th, and am locked with my leg at zero degree bend in this damn immobilizer.

From what I've read it looks like the rehab theories have changed quite a bit from when I had my first tear in '99. Back then I was at zero degrees bend and on crutches for six weeks straight and then started rehab. This time they're going to be slowly dialing ROM capabilities in to the brace starting next Friday and hope to increase load bearing to that leg progressively as well. The goal is to have me at full ROM by the end of six weeks after surgery, and then work of strengthening the quad.

I know two guys, both powerlifters, who tore BOTH quad tendons at the same time. How bad must that SUCK!

I look at both these injuries as challenges and welcome the test that rehabbing and getting back to 'normal' presents.

I would strongly encourage using some supplements that greatly aid in connective tissue strengthening, if you know what I mean.
 
Quad rupture from slipping is common, one leg goes forward, one leg goes backwards, the one that goes back pops the quad tendon, happens on stairs, happens on ice, etc.

May of 2010 I completely detached all three vasti from the patella tendon doing squats. I am still having difficulty with swelling and pain. I am able to train legs but with pain for a few days afterwards. I am still afraid to do squats but have worked up to some pretty good weight on the leg press. But still far from 100%. There is about a 2" diameter difference in the quad size between the two legs. By the way, I am 54.
