Right now im 194lbs & my arms measure at 17 inches. I want to stop doing the barbell curl for awhile & im wondering if i were to start with dumbbell curls as a first exercise, will it hinder my gains?
 
What does your lifting routine look like on the day you train biceps?
 
no one can tell you exactly what works for you, variation is great and will help fully develop the muscle, give it a try for a month or so and see how your body responds.

I generally alternate between barbell and strict db ever other week.
 
Pump the fuck out of them with whatever exercise you want then stretch the shit out of them

I ll do straight bar curls working my way up to 135lbs for 6 reps, cheating on the last one or two. Hammer curls & finish off with concentration curls.
 
If your wanting total arm size i would concentrate more on your triceps they make up more of your arms

or u could try cuttin back on the sets. bi's are small, and they get worked everytime u do back as well. i cut back to 2 sets, done to total negative failure. my strength shot up and i gained 1/2 inch in a couple weeks. course, that was doing tri work the same way. whatever works 4 you. everyone has a different opinion. all i know, for me, the 2 set routine done slo and to negative failure has worked wonders. that and dc style.

How the hell do you stretch your biceps? I feel like I'd snap my elbow tendons if I tried.
 
high volume.....100 rep giant sets (4sets of 25)minimal rest between
drop sets.......high and low
rest pause sets.......4 to 5 sec neg.....explosive pos.

Hold your arm out to the side in a door frame or somthing as if you were going to stretch your chest , roll your hand so the palm is facing the ground , place the corner of the door or wall in the gap between your thumb and first knuckleand just rotate around like you do when you stretch your chest , you can fold your wrist downto give it a differant angle , just try differant positions with your hand higher and lower and so on till your feel it
 
FWIW, I did some 60 degree incline db curls the other day because my back was a little tweaked and I did want to take a chance on making it worse with the usual bb curls. I hadn't done these years and forgot how great they work. I was pumped like crazy and sore to the bone the next day.
 
Every arm day I switch things up... as long as I pump the hell outta em Im happy.
