I've never smoked. I mean, I tried a few times in high school and college but that was a long time ago. Anyway, I'm not here to trash smokers. Many of my best friends smoke cigarettes. But all that is just an overture to my story about last night.

Yesterday was a bad day for many reasons but suffice it to say, a friend of mine, a chiropractor, went out for a well-needed drink to just loosen up. I'm not even a big drinker either but he was smoking and I said, "Screw it. Give me one of those." Well I tried to smoke that thing. People, I was sick like an animal. I was ready to throw up, dizzy, it hurt my lungs, tasted just awful. I mean AWFUL!

I've dealt with a lot of addictions for drugs. People use chemicals to feel good through and through the use, sooner or later, they many times wind up addicted. But addicted to cigarettes? What the fuck is wrong with you people? LOL... I understand the physical mechanisms of them and impact and satisfaction, blood-brain barrier, all that. But those cigarettes taste, smell, and make you feel like shit! I could never understand that. This is really meant to be semi-humorous so don't think I have bad thing for smokers.

I smoked for 12 years up untill jan 1st this yr, got my brother to quit too so im pretty chuffed :D It wasnt even as hard as i thought it would be and its definately right about the 3 day hump lol

HAHAHAHAHA....a long time ago at a friends wedding All the boys went outside for a smoke. Someone pulled out a joint and started passing this around. So when it came to me, and yes I smoked weed a long time ago I naturally had a drag, well the next thing that happened I was gagging, coughing nearly ready to throw up and started getting these head spins! I was like WTF was that? I found out that it was mixed with tobacco. it made me sick as a dog. So I am with you ouch, that shit they can keep. All i said to them was. WOW what a great way to fuck up a joint!! LOL.

I've had the same thoughts before...Cigarettes don't even give you that "wiggy" feelling like alcohol or narcotics etc....However, there are many that have kicked many diff. subtance abuse issues while they continue to smoke(Some, I know personally have kicked smokes as well). I'll get a little "sick" feeling from it if I choose to smoke even half of one.
Is it almost like a caffeine addiction?? I know it's diff. but it must be half way similar...

12 years! How?!? I know you have to get used to them and then they start to feel good? But what about the 100 packs you have to smoke before they stop making you want to just curl up and puke. You must really want to smoke bad to get past that.

Tyrone, caffeine is totally different. Caffeine even upon first use doesn't make you feel bad and sort of picks you up a bit. Cigarettes, those things don't do anything. They don't make you feel good, they don't taste good, smell good. Nothing.

I used to watch a lot of old-school Clint Eastwood, Bronson type movies and I always thought they looked cool and tough smoking a cigarette. Like it was the best thing on earth. But it's not. They suck!

I can enjoy a good cigar though. And I've heard smokers say they hate cigars so I guess it's a live and let live thing but damn.

During my years in school I said and felt the same way and now at
the age of 51 have been smoking on and off for over 25 years. I
started this nasty little habit when disco was in full bloom. Everyone
I knew smoked to be cool  After six months I never looked
back. Tried to stop many many times and have but always went back.
It's a known fact that cigarettes are more addictive then any other
drug. Ouch be very thankful you never took this road. My father died
at 47 I was 23 at the time and for the rest of my life i will never forget what
what he went through. I desided to delete the details. still very
disturbing to me.

I started when i was 12 and really only did it just because all my friends did but i never really got the sick feeling or coughing fits from cigerettes

Agree about cigars though, cant beat a nice cigar

Cigarette smoke can be right nasty to a first timer but once some
cross that threshhold it's a whole differant ballgame. there is a
satisfaction sort of like a high, I don't know how to explain it but
some people react differant to certain things. some get addicted
some say screw it.

I actually started smoking when I tried one while drinking. After that I was HOOKED. For some reason for me, drinking and smoking went hand and hand. Oh and smoking while dropping a deuce was awesome too LOL...Glad I quit though, everything feels better and now I can't stand the smell of smoke. Been 2 Years Smoke Free :)

Having dealt with numerous addictions myself in the past, smoking (for most) seems to follow the same premise as almost every other addictive substance; genetic predisposition! Some people try heroin for the fist time and instantly become addicted while others may not find the same "pleasures" as those who continue to indulge!

It was my last exam during finals, ending my first year of Med School and we were all congregated outside discussing whether or not we "thought" we passed. I was completely stressed beyond anything I'd ever encountered before and the next thing I knew, I was puffing on one of my mates cigarettes! Well, it continued on to the local pub after that and eventually on to the store where I bought my first pack! It wasn't until 2 years later that I realized that I made a HUGE error in judgment by accepting that 1st cig and so I decided to quit! Problem was, it wasn't quite as easy as just "wanting" to quit... It was hell... but I finally did manage to kick the habit completely!

I would give the same advice to someone considering smoking for the first time as I would to someone wanting to try heroin or meth...etc... DON'T even give it a thought much less a try! You just NEVER know if YOU have the genetic "preference" for a particular substance so why even entertain the thought? And, as we ALL know, smoking not only places one at risk for lung cancer but also for a number of other illnesses! Not to mention it's just plain disgusting; ESPECIALLY for those who frequent health clubs/gyms! There's nothing worse than someone walking past you in the gym wreaking of tobacco!

most start young trying to be cool. buy the time you realize they are killing you its to late. you don't notice how gross they are to you quit.

exactly what happened to me. and once you cross the line into addiction they are so hard to put down. i quit almost 2 years ago and at least once a day i want one. especially with aded stress. the crazy thing is when i quit for 9 months once, when i first smoked again it tasted terrible, but felt great. i had to force my self to smoke a few more, but within a couple of days it was like i had never quit. so grateful i dont smoke anymore.

17 years now....

I've been smoking when I drink. I buy a pack every time we go out or I meet up w/ friends (from 1 - 5x a week...even now at 35). BUT....as soon as I don't have a beer in my hand....I can't stand them. Even the first one when we're out sucks....but after that, nothing goes better together....except maybe chocolate and peanut butter. :D

But I have packs in the car, garage, where ever....never pick them up and puff on one. Makes me sick...won't even date (when I was single) chicks that smoked. Everyone said/says I'll get hooked. But give me 2 beers and they taste sweet. Until the morning....then my throat hurts and I swear them off.

I think most people start when they are young because they give you a buzz/head rush. That's when I first started them....I didn't like them when we tried them at 12 (you could go in a store and say you were buying them for your parents...75 cent a pack).....but my current friend from way back then....been smoking since 12. We're 35 now.

Peace

Smoking while dropping a duece!! Dude I laughed so hard at that i almost shot my protein drink out of nose! i can see a guy sitting on the throne pants and underwear around his ankles, no shirt, sweating, hair kinda messed up, pushing out a log and smoking at the same time. CLASSIC!!!

Sigmund Frued was able to dabble with cocaine and stop, but not his nicotine.

give a 30 year old person, who never had a drink before in his life, a shot of vodka straight up... see what happens... they'd either puke, curse the shit outta you, or punch you in the face... same with smoking... if you're used to it, it's nice from time to time... if you hate smoking and feel it's disgusting but you still wanna try something similar, look up something called hooka or shisha. it's kinda like a bong, but more advanced :) ... flavored tobacco dipped in glycerine that flows through water to get the smoke cooled and enters smooth in your lungs.... good stuff ;)

This is exactly how I am. Heavy night of drinking and smoking, next
day smell the clothes you had on the night before. It will make ya
want to throw up. And any cigarettes left get thrown in the trash.

STEEDA~

you can enjoy these things in moderation. Guess I've been lucky.

I remember watching Markus Ruhl's Made in Germany where he smokes a marlboro after grocery shopping. A funny sight to see a 300 lb. bb'er lighting up.

I will just say I think alot of it has to do with the reason you start smoking in the first place. I'm in the middle of quitting right now and its tough (understatement:D ) after almost 12 years. My point being I started when I was having major marital issues, basically to help deal with my stress. Now though, a cigarette in my mind is how I deal with stress and there is always something stressful happening. I hate smoking and am trying to change that so I dont die when Im 45-50. I believe whatever role smoking plays in your life and mind makes a huge impact on how easy it is to quit, ect. thus affecting people differently. Just my opinion.
