I recently had blood work done and my plasma urea nitrogen came back elevated, at 28 mg/dl (normal range for this blood lab is considered 8-25 mg/dl). I've always just thought it was nothing to worry about, showing nothing more than the fact that I consume a high protein diet. Never the less, I began thinking about it more and realized that there might be something more to it. I've always understood that a positive nitrogen balance is achieved through the nitrogen intake being greater than the nitrogen output or removal. This would indicate, unless I'm missing something, that nitrogen retention is high, thus your not at risk for losing any muscle. We're hopefully in an anabolic state.
I guess what I'm wondering is, despite the fact that my daily protein intake is in excess of 350g per day, I'm beginning to wonder if that protein isn't sufficient enough to increase my nitrogen retention. My intake is high, but my output is higher than the norm, so I'm essentially pissing out a great deal of what I'm putting in.
You guys think that there's something to this or is a high plasma urea nitrogen reading just the norm for anyone who's consuming above the daily norm of .8g/kg/day, seen in average, sedentary individuals? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
