So lots of bodybuilders deal with acid reflux but it comes a point where I don't think it’s from food choices/drugs but being too overweight.

When I go to bed I wake up choking from the reflux and have to take 10-20mg Pepcid to get back to bed.

I know the Pronton pump inhibitors cause nutrient deficiency’s , but short term they seem necessary.

Any suggestions?

Lose weight 🤷‍♂️

Not even being a dick but you kinda answered your own question lol if you’re overweight and believe that to be the cause shed some lbs and you’ll probably be better off for it , I know I am!

Not sure being overweight has much to do with it as food/food choices, inflammation, possible gastritis etc? Have you thought about getting checked out for that stuff if it’s really bad?

PPI’s also have a massive rebound effect.

I’m currently using Pepcid for my situation.

I had food poisoning a year ago, as months went on my appetite went down severely, lost 20+lbs unintentionally, I made things worse by trying to force feed, make up calories with cheat meals etc.

I was constantly having bad acid reflux, getting full quicker, food aversion, couldn’t digest meat or other “heavier” proteins/foods I used to love etc.

Went to the Gastro 6 weeks ago and got an endoscopy done, turns out I had gastritis, inflammation in my stomach and small intestine..

Currently on a diet that doesn’t provoke gastritis, I’m taking Pepcid as it reduces acid by about 50% to help heal the stomach lining but still be able to digest normally and it doesn’t have a rebound effect, taking Pepzin GI (Zinc-L-Carnosine) as it’s been shown to heal the stomach lining and GI tract etc.

Appetite has significantly increased over the last few weeks, I can eat more food, I can eat sooner (digestion feels much faster), no more acid reflux or bloating or indigestion etc.

Wish I would’ve gotten checked out sooner..

Certain compounds gives me acid reflux. What are you running right now? Anything new to the stack?

Bro, with all respect, you’re asking if your reflux could be from gaining weight, but you didn’t even think about the fact that you’re eating like shit?

You literally wrote that you follow that “eat whatever” Lee Priest approach and include a lot of junk food in your diet. So I mean… the conclusion seems pretty obvious, lol.

Sugestions...? stop eating garbage

I changed my diet since then and eating all this chicken and beef even clean still same problems

If it’s specifically at night push your last meal further away from bed time, make it smaller and or easily digestible stuff and take a walk between that and bed

And also still lose weight

I wanted to get up to 122kg under 15% bodyfat before my show that’s why I was talking about the PPI so I can bulk harder and go to bed without reflux.

But I like your idea for sure.

Personally I wouldn’t use a PPI it’s just masking and almost definitely making a pre existing issue worse and most likely causing new issues

Your body is telling you something by having reflux if you just throw PPI’s at it you’ll destroy your digestion long term and could end up with food rotting in your gut especially if your issue is lack of stomach acid which is often the case but the symptoms are so similar to an excess of acid so people just pop antacids like sweets

Fix the issue and make progress again don’t just kick the can down the road and end up with an even bigger problem

So most likely you are simply eating more than your digestive system can handle right now. In a heavy off-season it is very common to have bloating, more inflammation, and much slower gastric emptying. You even said yourself that you are using a lot of insulin to keep blood sugar in range, which usually means digestion and nutrient handling are already pushed hard.

It is hard to point to one single cause without full context. First thing I would do is reduce total food volume for a short time and see if reflux improves. Then check your fiber intake and look at how much highly fermentable food you have in your diet. And try to doing baking soda test.
Only after that I would think about digestive support. Depending on the situation, betaine HCl with pepsin or a full spectrum digestive enzyme product with amylase and lipase could help, but that depends entirely on how your diet looks.

Im gunna go with what Luki said as to eating more than your digestive system can handle (welcome to bodybuilding as you get older). Specially the part he mentioned about fiber and could be from possibly too many carbs. When I was younger and would add more carbs in, is when this would happen to me and I really needed the help from omeprazole. Now I usually take omeprazole every morning and will clear it up all day no problems. Although, to be honest with you omeprazole is not the healthiest choice and will probably get some heat for this mention of it, but at the end of the day it does the job when your suffering. If this only happens during bulking season, once lowering macro's could then stop needing to take the omeprazole. Baking soda before or after each big carb meal would be a healthier option. Some people have said oral bpc has helped with their indigestion but can't comment my self on it.

I need to start being more clear, I use insulin for appetite increase to force myself to eat enough carbs. My blood glucose and A1C is always on point without it.

I agree with you. Eat less, eat whole clean food, and find the minimum digestive supplement . I got prescribed oral BPC-157 and I’m getting a GI map test.

But Luki, what I’m saying even eating clean if you still 5’9 120kg you’ll possibly get reflux from simply having so much pressure on your digestive system and laying down.

I’m surprised you never had this issue when you were 135kg. And yes I know you eat clean and have healthy lifestyle.

They say the #1 reason for reflux is being too heavy / overweight.

I only had reflux when I tried using 250mg of anadrol a day once lol

But seriously, none of my clients, even those who eat 6-7k kcal a day, ever have reflux if they follow everything we set in the plan.

I really think the Covid ruined my digestive system. Ever since I got it everything for me changed. And on top of that I’ve had many other digestive issues since that Covid. I lost my taste for a long time from the Covid too and food ever since taste not good.

Thank you brother for advice ❤.

Yeah going to definitely lower food, I’ll get pretty lean quick since I lose weight fast.

I’ll stay away from the PPI.

From what I understand, there are basically two causes of acid reflux, one is too much acid and the other is not enough. If you don't have enough, the food sits in your stomach too long and eventually you get some coming back up. You can try Betaine HCL, which is an acid. If you take that and it helps, your problem is likely the too little acid issue. If it gets worse, obviously it's the other way. That's been my issue when pushing food high, and Betaine HCL has worked for me.

Brother see an Endo so they can diagnose with a endoscopy. My issues strarted out of the blue and turns out i have a hiatal hernia.Been on omneprazole for years one in the morning and stomach acid is gone.Best of luck!

Have you had a sleep study done? Reflux at night and waking up choking from it is a symptom of sleep apnea. Your lower esophageal sphincter can be affected and it allows stomach acid to back flow into the esophagus.

My acid reflux came from eating too much and not having my last meal digest properly before bed. I've started having my last meal before bed about an hour earlier and the reflux has subsided.

It also resulted in a swollen uvula, which made me snore very loud, so now I'm pulling back and dropping some weight so my wife can get a good night's sleep
