Back in July i tweaked my lower back. Not sure if it was from heavy rows or squats as it didn't bother me til a couple days later. 7 months later im still feeling the pain. Its not excruciating but i can't squat or do rows anymore. Mostly just leg presses and for back i hit seated rows. I came off cycle in november and have been slacking off in the gym trying to rest it but it hasn't gotten any better. Went to a chiropractor and helped a little but returned quickly. I figured after this long it would have worked itself out but hasn't. Has anyone dealt with this and if so what treatments/exercises have you done on the way to recovery

I unfortunately have a bunch of experience with pain in that area. I see a Chiro regularly now, get massages and went to a physical therapist to learn some specific stretches and trigger point work to do on my own. I suggest sticking with the chiropractor and getting hooked up with a physical therapist to start with and go from there.

had same problem for along time would come and go eventually i had to have surgery. i got the 3 epidurals which helped a lot, hurt like hell they only lasted a few months before the pain came back. the surgery i had was called was microdiscectomy finally gave me the relief i was after. ill tell you this stay away from chiro for lower back pain they will make it worse. ribs go out thats fine they are good for that. anyways been over a year since surgery was done i feel great still get stiff from time to time also i stay away from deadlifts and squats.

Where exactly is your pain? Is it your lower back, or dead center of your buttock?

I recently discovered after a series of cortisone shots that my piriformis muscle tightens up and causes my sciatic pain much of the time and it isnt actually my nerve or injury causing it.

Your problem sounds chronic, so I would advise steering clear of the chiro until you see what an ortho has to say. If it isnt a serious injury, you can always return to the chiro later.

Buy yourself some Rock Tape and apply it to your lower back or any other injured area. The tape pulls the skin away from the inflamed area and allows proper blood flow. One application usually lasts 5-7 days. I have been able to squat, dead lift, etc...with zero pain.

Yea its to the right of my spine on my lower back. I crossed my leg over my knee about a month ago and it pinched the nerve down all the way down the back of my right leg. I can do pretty much anything in the gym except deads squats and heavy bent over rows ( which are the main mass building exercises). I been cruising and was gonna start my cycle at the end of the month but damn i don't want to waste it if i Cant go hard as a motha in the gym. I cant tell if my back lost size because i came off or because i can't do rows without them being seated. Was your injury similiar to this and did the rock tape allow you to do deads, squats, or rows? Shit sucks

It sounds like we're probably dealing with the same issue. Massage therapy has helped immensely. One thing youre going to have to focus on is stretching... constantly. If its the periformis, cross your legs in a seated position and lean as far forward as you can go. I couldn't even sit straight up doing this at first. Another tip, while squatting, don't go below parrallel. Once below parrallel, your lumbar spine and sacrum start to bend inward further instigating the problem. Finally, get a belt but dont stop direct lower back and abdominal work. Just a lot of things that have helped me. Hope things work out.

I've been having lower back pain for 20 years now. Discs L4 and L5 are ruptured. The pain used to go all the way down my left leg, into my left ankle. I've done everything you can think of. Pain meds, physical therapy, Chiropractor , just about everything. Years ago I had to quit doing squats and some other movements because it aggravated the nerve. Still can't do them today. Trust me, I've learned the hard way. I was at the point where I was ready to try anything. About 3 years ago I started doing inversion. I hang upside down 3 times a week for about 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I have those gravity boots. Since I've been doing this my back doesn't hurt no way near as bad as it did before. I swear by this. It's still not 100% but way way better than it used to be. Sounds crazy, but it sure works for me.

Yup, I pinched a nerve in the exact same spot and saw a chiro (did not help) plus a massage therapist (helped) but the main thing that allowed me to keep lifting heavy and perform things like squats, lunges, dead lifts, rows etc was the Rock Tape.

When my lower back feels inflamed and in pain I apply the tape (correctly) and all of it disappears almost immediately. I was skeptical at first but can no longer lift without it. I have tried other brands without the same success, so I suggest sticking to the Rock Tape brand.

Here is more info- http://rocktape.com/products/tape/

I think you should try it, because at this point it can't hurt. I feel your pain bro, and it sucks:mad:

This happened to me a few years ago and lasted a good year or so, woke up one day and it was gone. Fast fwd, and about 4 months ago decided I would try squats agn, worst fucking thing for me to do. 3 days later my back was killing me, leg going numb and it kept me out of the gym. The only thing I can recommend is rest don't do anything that you already know irritates it and go see I chiro and get your spine decompressed. I was told not to do squats anymore so since I've been back I only do leg press, ext and curls, which is still 90% more than what 50% of the ppl at the gym do lol.

I've had it twice before, from going pretty hard and heavy on deads. I never got diagnosed for the specific reason, but I think my hams, back, and flutes just got too tight, and I wasn't stretching at all. I do rack deads mostly now and try not to neglect stretching. Wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy.

I've been having good luck with acupuncture for nerve impingement in my elbow. A friend gave me a card for a free session....amazing. I didn't believe it before but now I do. Guess that's why it's been around for thousands of years.

sounds good...i have L4 and L5/S1 bulging and ,man, the sciatic pinch puts me down for two weeks of excruciating pain....its the reason i quit lifting for two years and just now starting back....thinking about saying YES to surgery...idk

It's hard to explain to people about back pain that never had it before. But for people who have, they can relate. I'll probably need surgery one day , but for now I'm trying to do everything I can to not to.

Look into piriformis syndrome stretches. Doing these religiously (2-3 times a day) has really helped get rid of a lot of that sciatic nerve pain that runs from the outside of my hip, down through my glutes and back of leg.

Inversion table as well as a doctor that specializes in pain management. I had bulging disc L4/L5 and I had shooting pain down the whole back of my leg. Got to the point I couldn't sit in a car. 2 back specialists told me I needed surgery then went to a pain management specialist. Through a series of shots he was able to get the disc to retract and I have been pain free now for 10 years.

sometimes a cortisone injection and muscle relaxers are all you need. glad that worked out for you.

The cortisone injections did miracles for my herniated L5-S1. I had it so bad my wife had to wheel me to the bathroom in a computer chair to piss and the docs had to give me oxy just to get me in the MRI tube, but after 3 shots I was practically painfree. Did some physical therapy (I keep up on some of the exercises still) and I can lift whatever I want to nowadays.

Some good responses. As you can see everyone has a different story and remedy.

Take these peoples advice collectively and figure out what works for you. I guarantee no two stories are similar; as you can tell from the responses so far.

For me injections eventually cleared it up enough for me to start light stiff leg deadlift, romanian and eventually squats. Im a firm believer in getting tons of blood flow to the area as well as strengthening the muscle that are responsible for supporting your spine.

Welcome to stretching, foam rolling, heating pads etc. You'll have to reevaluate your training but doesn't necessarily mean deads n squats are out just that you have to have infinite patience. Imagine my ego when I would do a whole squat session with a pair of 25's on each end. Lol. Im now up to 355x5 i'll never be legit strong but beats a sedentary life.

Sorry for the novel but im pretty passionate about this subject and battled(ing)it for years.
