They can.

Commanders can request samples be tested for steroids. In this case, the samples are sent to the Olympic testing laboratory at the University of California at Los Angeles.

hey my roommate just went off into the marines and he was on just test e and some dbols weeks before he went off. he told me and some of his friends in his platoon that the armed forces really have no care in the world about people using aas. one of them served time in the middle east and said that some guy was doing weekly shots of test in the tents lol.
I'm not saying that there are no worries at all but from how it seems where he went they didn't really bother. they mostly just test for pot, coke, and shit like that.

I spent 8 years in the Marines 1/1 and 1stFRP and they did implement steroid testing for us in 2006, cool part was they gave us a six month warning. My good friend was our SACO officer(Substance Abuse Counceling Officer) and he said they only sent out 1/10 to actually be tested. There are a few articles online regarding the militaries testing policy. I got out in 09 so I cant attest to weather or not they still test.

Watch out, some PCT drugs will show up in a drug test, I'm pretty sure clomid does!
