sleep apnea surgery

just got out of the hospital.......oh dear god i wanna die. if anyone is considering this hit me up and i will give you the details. wont know how effective it is till i heal:confused:

Why did you decide to have the surgery? I was offered that option when I was first diagnosed but went with the C-PAP machine instead. The prospect of painful surgery with only about a 50-50 chance of success did not appeal to me. Have the odds of a successful result from surgery improved?

Hang in there edge..in time, you will be back hittin the iron 110%. We are keepin fingers crossed that the surgery was a success for you. Can't imagine the pain that you are in. I'd stay sedated as much as possible if I were you. Take care brotha.

I don't know what your surgery is going to consist of but I just had my Uvula taken out due to snoring etc. and it wasn't that bad. I had to take a few days off of work because the pain meds made me too sleepy and dizzy but I never missed a meal.

BI-PAP

I like the BI-PAP much much better than the C-PAP. I opted to not have surgery because of the low success rate.

If the surgery turns out negative check into a BI-PAP with nasal pillows. I hope your one of the ones who has success. ;)

hey edge, when you feel up to it, can you give us a little more details i.e. were you on a machine before? or were you recently diagnosed? witch surgery was it? ect. ect.
I need to go to the Dr. about this myself, I was waiting to get insurance, but I've been dealing with this for a couple yrs. and need to get it checked out...My girlfriend won't hardly spend the night because it freaks her out when I stop breathing and she doesn't get any sleep..I don't remember sleeping for longer then a couple hours at one time in the last couple yrs.
I don't feel myself gasping for air or anything, I just thought I woke up alot, it seems like it started after I hit 230-240, my BF never gets higher then 10%
any info will be helpful and appreicated........

PEACE BigBis

sleeping on a c-pap sucks i'm 31 and the idea of sleeping on a machine the rest of my life is worse any pain i have to go thru. i had 3 different dr's recommend i have the surgery. to compound my problem i had a severly deviated septum that interupted breathing thru the nose. the surgery has a 60% success rate. i had my tonsils taken out, uvula removed, 1cm of the back of my throat/mouth removed and the sinus tissue burned back on both sides of the nose. it will be a week or so and another sleep study to know the full results. i did not snore last night so that is a very good sign, also i do not have any speech impediment, food or water is not going up my nose, i have my sense of taste so far although part of my tongue is still numb. like i mentioned i had problems even snoring on my c-pap i could also be completely asleep and take my mask off and never know it till i awakened. my neck size is around 20" and my bodyweight has been up to 260's. my respiratory specialist said anytime someones neck gets over 17.5 problems can begin to occur. he told me to continue lifting/bodybuilding if i wanted just to stay alittle leaner and do more cardio. if the surgery does not work its back to the c-pap machine which will be easier if i have to return to it because i will be able to breathe thru the nose now:D

Well, then, I definitely hope everything goes well for you with the surgery. Sounds like you would have needed some sort of surgery, regardless. I got my machine at about the time I was your age, so if you do hae to use one, don't worry, you just get used to it.

edge

Glad to here everything went well. Im still following up on what you recommended. Hope to hear everything is 100% soon. Keep us posted.

I had the same surgery done about 3-4 years ago... went through 2 weeks of what felt like bad strep thought then it got better... I definitely sleep better now... no more apnea... better memory, more energy, better workouts from the better sleep etc...

I'm just starting to snore again - so may look at going back for a followup... it's either that or the wife starts sleep'n in the spare bedroom.... hmmm that might not be bad...

Good luck with the recovery bro...

I had it all (uvula, etc) taken out 6 years ago and was pure hell for several weeks while I could only eat liquid food, pain was incredible.

In the end, made absolutely no difference,

Solution: Become a pencilneck again! LOL!

|--[\\\]>------- that sucks man, but hope you feel better. my gf's mom said she sat up and monitored my sleep one night (wierd huh?) and she said there would be times in b/t my loud snoring that i would just stop breathing and then start up again? i am totally confused by this....i had no idea.

Sleep Apnea - Tonsils - Uvula - Septum

I'd be cautious about apnea surgeries. Many doctors in the sleep specialty area are one-trick ponies looking for sleep apnea. That's the only way they can actually do very much. There really isn't any other condition in the sleep area which allows them to do anything aggressive. If you don't have sleep apnea, they can only prescribe sleeping medication. They'd probably make more money shooting craps than writing prescriptions all day.

That's funny - My doc just suggested I get a similar surgery. We'd take out my tonsils, shorten my uvula, and correct a deviated septum. I'm seriously debating it - I have a hard time breathing at night.
Oh man! Sounds like in his last life, your doctor was paid on a piece rate stuffing envelopes, until he found a list of all the parts of the nose and throat. Now he's in this more lucrative field, and his wife and kids are stuffing the envelopes!

Get a second opinion, preferably from a specialist at a teaching hospital. Surgery is always something you do as a last resort because if it goes wrong, you're permanently in worse shape, and it's a treatment that's irreversible.

Another option is to tell your doctor that if he can come up with something that's non-surgical, you'll help with the envelopes on Tuesday evenings,

i actually had a small team of dr's. an ear, nose, and throat specialist, family doc, and a pulmonologist all behind this plus all the specialist at the sleep center. on a good note healing is moving along and i slept really good last night.....snoring yes but the wife said the breathing was alot more consistent. i have more sleep studies scheduled so they will tell the real truth, i go back to visit the ear, nose, throat guy tomorrow. lou you are correct its only a 50/50 chance but i disagree about being worse off if it doesnt work, if it is unsuccessful i simply go back to the c-pap and learn to adapt to it.

hey bro

way to stay positive. you have an awesome attitude even in pain from the surgery. i just read the post and i hope you feel better soon. i really hope the surgery is successful as you r a great bro and wish you the best. ill pm you later in the day, feel better buddy, if theres anything i can do, please ask.

how long is surgery?

actual surgery was just under an hour, i was in the hospital for 2 days. also i wore and oxygen/heart rate monitor for 2 days when i got home. i had solid food yesterday for the 1st time since last tuesday, hurt for awhile but i adjusted and it felt really good to have something solid in my stomach. i have to almost mush the food up and chew on it alittle longer, lol. my wife actually slept in the same bed with me last night and i dont remember getting kicked or elbowed so i take it i did good breathing wise, lol. i estimate i will be healed in about another week and beable to start hitting the gym and eating normally. the break will do me good, its hard phsychologically cause you become the incredible shrinking man when you live on soup and havent seen the gym in over a month but i look forward to the muscle memory and the additional 5 i'll prolly put on from giving my body a break. i've prolly lost close to 30lbs:rolleyes: i'll gain 40 back:D
