SNACKS FOR KIDS

My kids, 5 and 6, get an assortment of snacks.

We do not have chips, candy, cookies, or any of that stuff in stock in our house. We get them peroidically and its like christmas to our kids.

We simply allow them to fruit, yogurt, veggies, etc.... This is all they have known, so its not an issue for them.

We do hear it from kids that come over... dont your parents have soda or something... my kids look at them like they are on mars.

However, we still allow ice cream and the "bad" items periodically.

Our goal is just to teach them about "choices". You can grab a candybar, great, or you can grab a apple. My kids tend to grab the apple on most occassions.

I don't have kids....but here are some tips:

*Use smaller silverware, plates, and cups. This will allow the kids with big appetites to eat less. It makes them think they ate a lot when those smaller dishes are full. This helps eliminate excess calories eaten in large portions for those kids who have bad eating habits. It also trains the ones growing up. Obviously, veges are fine in all portion sizes for most of the time.

*Increase their veges and fruits as snacks. Get creative by using baby carrots with ranch dressing. Make you own ranch dressing out of Greek Yogurt.

*Most healthy foods these days have some sort of children's theme to it for marketing. Sesame street, or any of the cartoons that are out these days, you can find some kind of character on healthy foods. Use this advertisement to your advantage.

*Use greek yogurt and add in fruit and sugar free pudding.

*Add fruit to regular yogurt in fun packs.

*Add fruit to cottage cheese, or raisins to it. Add coloring to make it more attractive if it is needed (Or use greek yogurt).

*Keep all junk foods out of reach, less the better. You don't have to get all anal on this, I mean, let them have a treat every now and then.

*If youi give junk foods, keep portions reasonable. Again, use smaller kids accessories to help them think they are getting more.

*Add some whey to their milk for flavoring.

*Use oatmeal instead of cold cereals.

*Diet soda & splenda in the place of sugary drinks.

*Use leaner cut meats and poultry.

Crap, I have an appt at work....:)

i let mine eat whatever they want otherwise they wont eat! some days they only want meat and veggies. other days they want only SUGAR! those are the days when my girlfriend and i age much quicker.:D

all kids like the same stuff: mac n cheese, hot dogs, sweets, pizza, happy meals etc; i will let them decide when they want to focus on eating healthy. kids dont need that added stress, there will be plenty more time for that later on in life.
