I am now awaiting my first laptops with solid state hard drives from Dell. They are only 32GB, but they have no moving parts. 37% faster seek and overall bandwidth. I am seriously looking forward to this revolutionary change.

My friend's uncle works at IBM and he said he brought home an 80 gig ram chip... Apparently it cost upwards around $40k

The main issue with the higher memory solid states is heat dissipation.

40K is way out of range. 32GB is running my clients $648.

Last time I checked, the biggest problem with Flash based SSDs where the limited number of read/write cycles till failure.

Yeah that was some time ago when the 80 gig stick was 40k. Prices have gotten much better!

More info from our purchase order. We ordered 1200 of these.

Systems Affected: Latitude D420 and Latitude ATG D620

General Information:
The 1.8” Solid State Drive provides great performance AND reliability, offering up to 23% improved system performance in office applications vs. a mechanical HDD1. Additionally, with no moving parts, SSD is designed to provide a quantum leap forward in durability and reliability.

Benefits:

· Up to 23% improved system performance under typical office productivity use1

· Boots up to 34% faster than a standard 1.8” HDD on Windows Vista (up to 15% faster on Windows XP)2

· Tests prove an operating shock tolerance of up to 1300 G’s. After this point, the test hardware breaks, not the Solid State Drive.

· Position to customers looking for the best combination of durability, reliability, and performance

· Examples of usage models:

· Mobile professionals

· Users who use their notebooks in the field

· Users who need the highest standard of data reliability

Sales restrictions:

System tied option on Latitude D420, ATG D620
Customer kits available on Latitude D420, ATG D620
Legend Code(s):
Latitude: 32DSS

SKU(s): System tied option on D420 and ATG D620 only
Latitude D420: 341-4871

I would assume far less seek latency with these devices. 23% is a nice increase but I would want more speed for the price.

im assuming you could maybe install multiple sets of these hard drives to increase your overall mem. capacity in RAID array or something correct?

oh shit these are for laptops??? is there even room for more than 1?? 32g wile enough for certain biz apps.... i dont think it would be enough if you just had one and you did alot of graphics and multimedia stuff goign on.

wao i'll move to them as i always fuk my hdd

With the HDD being the slowest thing in the box this is pretty neat to see this being more common now, I'm surprised it didn't offer even more performance boost though. I wonder what OS load time comparisons would be.

We can build a laptop fresh install of XP in about 5 minutes with a full format. It's that fast, really. When the box is build, it jumps from BIOS screen to MSGINA (CTRL-ALT-DEL dialog) without normal verbose MSGINA startup message, "Network is starting up", etc...

For those who like to learn on here MSGINA just stands for:

Microsoft Graphical Identification and Authentication.
