The American Medical Association's Committee on the Medical Aspects of Sports cautioned athletes and coaches last week against the use of two new types of drugs—one a painkiller, the other intended to induce weight gain.

The painkiller, DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide), is new and as yet not fully tested. Applied to the skin, it penetrates and does appear to reduce pain, but the medically pure grade is not legally available except to doctors investigating it. The industrial grade contains impurities which could penetrate the skin along with the DMSO. And, as the committee pointed out, "pain is a respected safeguard against the premature return of the athlete to competition."

The weight-gain drugs (androgenic-anabolic steroids) can have horrendous results. In prepubertal boys, the committee warned, they may stop growth, induce precocious puberty and decrease testicular size. In the pubertal boy, the warning continued, the steroids markedly suppress production of testosterone, a male hormone. And in adult males, testicular size and function revert to the prepubertal stage, and there is "decreased libido."

A gain of a few pounds would not seem to be worth it.

Even to this day the bullshit continues. I was listening to a local radio station and an alleged "doctor" was spouting only the side effects of anabolic steroids and even ended his little tirade with, "If you take them, you definitely hurt yourself."

Of course, Alcohol, Marijuana and Aspirin are at the top of the emergency room visit lists each year, along with vitamin overdose (!) but steroids are bad.

And according to the documentary "Bigger Stronger Faster" (everyone here should watch that, by the way), the government will never conduct a study on anabolic steroids to see what they really do long term. If that's the case, I don't see how they can continue to spread these lies without proof.

Where are you getting this Marijuana information from? It is simply impossible to overdose from Marijuana.

Looks like they were pretty spot on to me.
Please point out where they are wrong. The whole anablition is based upon to "protect our children" .
There was no need to criminalize them and the users.

Hey, I'll be the 1st to say that weed is pretty harmless, but there are definitely ppl going to the ER for it.. Taken from a medical statistics website:

DAWN shows that over half of all the drug-related visits during 2005 involved an illicit drug... marijuana was involved in 242,200 visits

There were double the visits for cocaine tho, so what this guy said is not completely true.

I think pretty much everybody understands that AAS should not be administered to prepubertal individuals, and I hope safety continues to be a concern there for prevention of use, but they are kind of throwing it out there in a misleading way imo, because I don't know a single individual, in-person and on the boards, that wants to promote AAS use for these individuals. But yeah, I agree with Massive G, that this would definately be spot on for a heads up if teenagers were to start using them.

Where are you getting this Marijuana information from? It is simply impossible to overdose from Marijuana.

Marijuana related hospital visits doesnt mean you overdosed. I.e. Smoking a joint and driving and then crashing your car and getting hurt.And dont say smoking weed and driving is easy. My buddy cant smoke and then drive. He starts freaking out

Thats simply cuz ur buddy is a rookie. Me and all my "buddies" drive high all the time, and in fact, we drive more relaxed and obey the speed limit more than if we were sober.

The point was more people go to the emergency room for pot than AAS, for whatever reason. A trip to the ER for AAS is more than likely do to infected injection site, just my opinion.

What is there not to believe? Every year tens of thousands of people go to the ER after smoking weed, and the statistics are out there to prove it. It's not from overdose, cuz you can't OD on it, but some ppl can definitely get anxiety, panic attacks, and/or pass out from smoking.. I've seen it quite a few times.

They were probably referring to Dianabol or it could be Nilevar, Anadrol, Anavar, Winstrol, or deca there are a few more that were popular in the mid 1960's. When AAS first came out, they were heavily used over Testerone-that's why the article refers to testicular atrophy and HPTA shut down.

You guys have to understand that most of the AAS we have today (many taken off the US Market) were syntesized in the late 50's through mid 1960's.

These were being synthesized for medical needs anemia and muscle wasting. AAS was pretty much in it's infancy and most of the research and studies are antiques now.

It's a shame because the pharm companies could and can formulate better AAS with less sides with greater effects but they don't due to the stigma around them now with the advances in chemistry and modern medicine.

I did learn something from the article -that DMSO went that far back. I did a lot of research on DMSO back in the Finasol days and it was used quite extensively IV and injectable as a pain killer for those in chronic pain, off label use though in naturo and homeopathic doctors offices.

I remember the days of walking in the gym and the greasy stains all over the benches and the place reeking of garlic....guys were rubbing that crap all over themselves like baby oil...

LOL I can still smell that shit just thinking about it. I had a friend who I used to train with sometimes who swore by useing Fina with the DMSO....after a few "cycles" and hardly any results he ended the use. But the smell....Oh Lord the smell was so bad I couldnt train with him anymore.
